OK you guru's of alignment,HELP! Boat is bayliner 2452,350 chev, alpha 1 gen II mercruiser. The problem is that the alignment bar is tight on the left (port) side, I can get it perfect up and down, but it only reads the splines on the left side. I turned the motor 180 degrees and nothing changed , so it is not the coupler.Ihave loosened the mounts and barred it sideways, helped a little but it is still not right. WTF is going on? Any input would be a big help, thanks

Check both front mounts. Are they sitting flat with the stud STRAIGHT up through the mount on the block? If the stud comes up through crooked it can pull the motor around in funny ways....just went through that.

Remove the front mount bolts holding the mounts to the stringer and move the engine left or right until it's equal. Then redrill and bolt the mounts down.

May just be the gimbal bearing sitting in it's socket a little crooked. Put the alignment tool in and give a few hard sideways palm slaps both ways.

Alright, the foul beast is finaly aligned, turns out there was two problems, #1 one stringer was 1/4 in higher than the other, #2 the gimbal bearing was a little crooked. Thanks for the tips:)
