I have a 13' runabout that had serious gelcoat probs. I have layed up 3 coats of resin to a perfect finish but can I finish coat with an ordinary Enamel top coat.. we are talking a boat that will be in the water about once every two weeks...

I wouldn't use enamal, the standard is to use a 2 pack paint.. much stronger..

I have had limited success with acrylic lacqurer, but wouldn't recommend it as its:
a: not as good a finish without alot of work.
b: nowhere near as strong as 2pack.

but hey,, if you want to try it, pick a small non obvious place and try it.. see what it looks like..

but like I said, not really recommended.

rgds

Frank

not 2 pot, its called 2 pack...

Its sort of like "araldite" (that epoxy glue stuff).

You have a base layer, and a cover layer.. the two bond together to form the hard coat.. the bonding is chemical in nature, it doesn't dry with solvents like normal paints.

I have never heard of a paintable version, but I guess there could be..

normally it requires that you use a compressor and spray gun to apply it.

done properly it can look better and be stronger then Gelcoat.

hope that helps..

rgds

Frank

I have used and am using two part paints or linear polyurethanes and applying it with a roller then tipping with a brush. This is the alternative to spraying and works so well it is hard to tell the difference. Check out the Interlux site http://us.yachtpaint.com/usa/ and others and you will find that there are one part polyurethanes and two part products that you can brush with good results. The only two part I have heard that does not yield a good finish is Awlgrip...but I don't have experience. Petite also has a good one part polyurethane that brushes well. I have used it extensively on a 35' Chris Craft Roamer inside and on the topsides and cabin. My 56'er has the Interlux 2 part, Interthane, on the topsides and other exterior surfaces. The paint applies similar to oil base enamel but does not sag as much. Sometimes it pulls as the pot ages. It has a long pot life and does not just "set up" like some think.
Good luck.

Thanks capt.. just learned something..

whats it cost to do a boat in this stuff???

been wanting to do my whole boat.. but thought the cost would be prohibitive..

my gelcoat sucks really bad hull and topsides.
beyond just fixups in both cases.

boat is a fairly narrow 17 foot half cabin.

rgds

Frank

Re: Will Enamel paint stick to resin?

kiwiguy -- I've had some adhesion problems using enamel over epoxy, but found that could be corrected by cleaning the patch and using a good primer (like sandable primers, and prefer a couple of coats). I'm sure the same process would work over your resin.

I like lacquer too (with Frank) but agree that it finally isn't a great choice for hull work. The nice part about lacquer is that it sets up quickly and allows multiple coats quickly. It's hard to control runs with enamel, and enamel seems to me to be more temperature-sensitive. (Unlike lacquer, humidity is OK for enamel, but the temperature has to be just right or it's difficult to work with -- in my experience.) But you are kind of stuck with it -- think I would recommend the Petit one-part poly, based on my experience (used it on both wood and fiberglass).

A rule of thumb is "epoxy will bond to anything but nothing will bond to it". Of course, ther are exceptions but 99% of the time, that's true.

c/6

Hooty
