The simple answer is the vehicle can tow it but in an emergency situation (someone stops short in front of you) you won't be able to stop it. Thats a very hazardous condition. Don't risk it.

Re: Will my Ford tow this?

i have a 91 sundowner 225 and a 95 f 150 5.0l w/8ft bed, i know i am at or pushing capacity. but the differnce between my 16 year old truck and your 1 year old truck is i have a longer wheelbase and a towing package with tranny cooler and class 4 hitch as well as i do brakes on my truck when i feel they are starting to get low and i pull trailers a lot so to me its just another trailer, and i know i have to watch the lights a 1/4 mile away to time weather or not i might have to stop and i keep good distance between me and the other road *** holes who dont care. with that vehical even though its basically new i wouldn't even hook it on the hitch. my mom has an exploror nothing wrong with the brand its the fact that toung weight of the boat will ruin your vehical sooner rather then later.

Re: Will my Ford tow this?

Short story. I pulled my new to me Wellcraft Nova 23 XL back to Indiana from Virginia with a Ford E150 van. Granted it only has the smaller engine but a V8 nonetheless. I can tell you that that poor van took a beating in the mountains and I don't think the trailer brakes are working either. I am pretty sure that the Bayliner weighs more than my boat and I would be very cautious pulling it with that Explorer if I did it at all. As mentioned, you may have alot of trouble slowing it down and it may be very easy for that trailer to "overpower" a small suv like the Explorer. If like you said, you're only going a very short distance, get help. Have a buddy run "block" and make sure you're going really slowly. In WV I was down to 40 MPH due the their unbelievably poor highway maintenance on I-64 Westbound. I was scared to say the least. Flat land, no problem and only a few miles, you bet. Try it out, see how it feels but do it where you can't hurt anyone but yourself. I now have mine home and it's time to see how it does on the back of the Landcruiser after I shorten the tongue. Man I wish I'd taken that instead of the van.

Re: Will my Ford tow this?

I have towed about 5000 lbs (3000 lb race car on an open trailer with tools etc) with my brothers 2006 Explorer Limited (V8, tow package truck) and can say it did a great job. Trailer did not push the truck around at all, and it definately had the power to move it with ease actually.

I did have a panic stop, due to Friday afternoon traffic, and it was hairy. Pedal mashed down close to the floor, and come to find out, the trailer brakes had stopped working on that trip to the race track. Needless to say the stopping distance suffered, but the truck never got off course and controlled the trailer fine. We fixed the brakes and the truck tows the load very, very well. I have a 99 F250 with a V10, and have towed with my fathers 06 2500 Cummins Dodge as well, and the Explorer actually surprised me.

With that said, Bayliners have always seemed like lighter weight boats. I am very shocked to see this cruiser nearing 5000 lbs rated on Nada. If the boat is a 5000 lb before fuel, gear and trailer, I would get something bigger. A 1/2 ton should have more than enough to move the boat safetly, and I am unsure why people are suggesting 3/4 ton trucks, I see no need for that much.

Are you sure that's a Ford? Sure looks like the Navistar pickup International released for a few years last decade.

Oh yes. I am well aware of it. I pulled a 53' van for about 8 years. Also, I pull a 31' travel trailer with our Expedition. I have three types of sway control and a weight distributing hitch. I am fully aware of how it can cause issues. But that is exactly my point. His scenario is just asking for trouble, ans Explorers are not known as fantastic heavy tow vehicles.

Their not known as fantastic vehicles period.

If you are near/at/above your tow limit, remember that the rating is for half a tank of fuel in the vehicle, no cargo and a 150lb driver, anything above that, you reduce your towing capacity. I'd say don't do it, if you get into an accident, you run the risk of having your insurance company deny the claim because you were operating your vehicle in an illegal fashion (overweight). You really need at least a 1/2ton pickup to do the job. I don't want to rain on your parade but you will kill your Explorer pulling that boat around.

The motor won't take it.You need atleast a V8. When you hit a hill, you might need a pusher to get you up it. Towing to Erie out of Pgh with a 07 silverado 5.3 was a chore. I was pulling a SeaRay 240 SD. Man would that tranny do some shifting.

If it is only 10 miles go for it. Just take your time. Stopping it will be the scernio.

Re: Will my Ford tow this?

I would be towing it for about 10 miles where I will dry berth it. Unfortunetely there are no side roads at all.

After reading alot of these comments, I gotta say I'm concerned now.

The boat weighs in at exactly 4624 lbs without fuel (which it won't have when towing). The trailer weights 1,085 lbs for a total of 5709 lbs. My Ford's max tow capacity is 5375 lbs.

Got a friend who can tow it for you? You'll be fine if you take it slow, make sure the trailer brakes are on, and drive very defensively. Avoid hard stops, turns, fast acceleration... the usual. And the general rating on tow vehicles, half that and you will get a decent ride, especially for highway travel, vs feeling your on a roller coaster.
And don't get pulled over.... Someone care to explain why?

Re: Will my Ford tow this?

Only real way is to tow it to a scale and weigh it without your vehicle on the scale. Then you'll know without a doubt.

If iwere in your shoes, I'd get an 5.4L F-150 or 250 to tow it.

If you take your boat to a scale at a truckstop, don't unhook it and leave it on the scale, I can promise you that you will have several truck drivers more than willing to push it off the scale for you.

If you just pull off the scale leaving the boat on the scale then you don't get an accurate weight either because the tongue wight would be absorbed by the tow vehicle.

Weigh the tow vehicle and boat/motor/trailer together, then come back with just the tow vehicle and weigh it......do the math and you have your weight.

Please remember to keep in mind that those drivers are working and you are in their workplace, be respectful of that. It also wouldn't hurt to let the cashier know ahead of time before weighing so they know it's not a commercial vehicle. Some places get anal about that......it will cost about $20.
