I have a 1976 chrysler 700 skier. I thinkk it is a 70 horse. I test drove the boat three times b-4 I bought it and it ran fine. The day I bought it it wouldnt start and hasnt started since. I was told it was the distributor sensor or somthing like that. Any ideas on where I can find one or any other problem it could be

Doesnt seem to be firing at any point. They have fuel flow to them. It will turn over fine but will not even choke or attempt to fire. cant get it to do anything.

Re: Will not start. Any ideas

Is there a distributor on this motor. B/c I can not find one any where on the internet. I find them for inbooard chryslers but not for the outboard. Its making me think that i dont know what a distributor is. This motor has been sitting up for about 5 years since it last ran. I know that I am going to need to have the Carbs rebuilt but I just need a boat this summer and have a boat but two bad engines.

There are three types of ignition systems for a 70 HP chrysler. Battery ignition,Magnapower CD ignition (Delta System) and Magnapower CD ignition ( Motorola System)all of which have distributors. You mentioned it wont choke. You have to have the motor in neutral in order to get the starter to spin. Then you have to push the key in for the choke to engage. YOu should hear a loud click as the solinoid opens the choke. Advance throttle as far as it will go in neutral and it should start. I doubt there is a distributer sensor on something that old.

OH YEAH I HAD IT PUMPED UP. WILL YOU NEED THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE MOTOR FOR PART MATCHING.
WHEN I PUSH THE KEY IN THE SELENIOD DOESTN MAKE THAT CLICK SOUND THATS HOW I KNOW IT ISNT CHOKING. COULD IT JUST BE THE SELENOID. I KNOW I AM SKIPPING ARROUND BUT BACK TO THE DISTRIBUTOR. ARE THEY REAL EXPENSIVE ($800?) OR NOT. COULD SOMEONE WITH BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ELECTRONICS PUT ONE ON

Easy to put in. You dont need a serial number but the model number would help. It should be below the carb near the air baffle. Have you tried to manually choke it? I use a broom handle with the cowling off while trying to start it hold the choke butterflies open. Get the choke issue fixed first, then go after the distributer if needed. Chryslers do not start good without choke and that might be your only problem. Try a manual choke and post back. I can help you with the choke solinoid and interlock switch. Do you know how to use a volt meter?

OK I WILL GET YOU THE MODEL NUMBER. WOULD THERE POSSIBLY BE ONE ON THIS WEBSITE. THE MTOR IS NOT ON A BOAT YET. I AM TRYING TO PUT IT ON AN OLD TIDECRAFT B/C I BURNED UP THE MOTOR THAT WAS ON IT. SO I AM TRYING TO GET AN EASY FIX FOR THIS ONE. I AM NOT SURE THAT IT ISNT TO BIG.
IT IS THE SAME HORSE POWER BUT WEIGHS MORE. I HAVE DECENT KNOWLEDGE OF MECHANICS. SO DO YOU THINK WITH ADVICE I COULD PUT IT ON MYSELF.

The starter solinoid will only engage if motor is in neutral. There is a switch on the tower on the starboard side that will allow voltage to go to the starter solinoid when it is engaged. The solinoid is easily tested with a battery charger and an ohm meter. Once you get the motor to spin hopefully it will start. I would go with a compression test next and test for spark. Most chrysler ignition parts are no longer availible and iboats will not sell them. Ebay and mercury are the best chances of finding some of the parts availible. With out the model number it will be hard to check to see what it out there. Motors made in late 60 and early 70 may be impossible however late 70 early 80 models parts may still exist.

Model number should be stamped on a plate near the lower carburator near the air baffle on the lower cowling. It will probably read something like 709HA, 70871 or 709HBA or something similar.

You can find the distributor parts at mercruiserparts.com it is little difficult to navigate but worth it. I have bought my parts thier, mine was converted for a distributor. They have the parts from 70 to 105hp chryslers.

I dont know exactly what the problem with my distributor is. so I cant order parts when i dont know the problem. Seeing as how they dont sell the whole distributor I will have to break into it an discover the problem if possible. I noticed that they dont carry all the parts for the distributor. But its a miracle that they had any at all. Thanks for all the advice. I will keep you updated on my progress.

817822A1 I think that is my part number and am having problems finding one. I hsve found website that dont crry it anymore and ones that send me to power packs instead of distributors. I have found just about every part for a chrysler outboard to copmletely rebuild it. It would just so happen that the one i need doesnt even exsist. If anyone knows where I can get one I would appreciated it. I tried ebay too. All they really have are manuals.\

Re: Will not start. Any ideas

Is that number missing a number? Like 709H9A? Either way it is from 1979. CD unit is capacitor discharge. A capacitor holds a charge then releases it which is sent to the spark plug and fires the gas in the cylinder. A CD unit holds the electric charge till a predetermined time.

You have something else wrong with that motor. If the choke solinoid is not clicking you have some other electrical issue that may be causing your ignition problems. You could have a blown fuse or circuit breaker or a broken wire. Parts for that distributer are going to be hard to find. Taking it apart could cause more damage then you are fixing. You need to get a service manual and start troubleshooting by the steps outlined in the manual. Clymer is a good manual as well as syloc. www.chryslercrew.com has downloadable service and parts manuals for a cost and they have a thursday night chat that has an experienced mechanic on the forum.
