I haven't visited this forum in a while as I sold my previous boat. I recently purchased a 14ft starcraft with a '89 25hp merc. The majority of water this boat will see is a med size river full of logs and sandbars. Which is where the problems lies. It's a tiller, so in order for me to see ahead of me I need to get on plane, but in order to hold plane the speed is just a little too fast for my liking, (especially at night) so I back off and lose plane. I would like to be able to see the logs in front of me and be able to travel a little faster than "trolling speed". Will the smart tabs allow me to do this?

Smart Tabs may help, but it will have to run at planing speeds for them to make any difference. The tabs will lower the planing speed, but I can't tell if you if it would lower it enough for you to be comfortable.

Use the ST980-30 for this set up. The bow rise even before the boat planes will be minimal. You should be able to see over the bow at any speed. My guess is that the boat as it is now has a minimum plane speed of about 18 MPH. It should plane at about 13 mhp with the tabs, maybe less.
