Also I just noticed that there are 4 leafs per wheel, not sure if that helps out or not.

Nope, not really,....

Ya need the diameter of the axle, where the bearings ride, 'n the tire ratings printed on the tires....

"Sigh" well looks like I have to go out there and brave the stinking sub zero weather and pull a wheel and hub off then huh?.....BRRRRRR......

Well I know the tire ratings are 1760 X 4 tires. I put all new tires on it the other day. The ones that were on it were dry rotted...

That would be more effort that I would be willing to spend. A 10 minute call to the manufacturer would geterdone without ever going outside.

The only thing I could pull off of the manufacturers tag is the partial number of-???1L3T1202XL1370362, Boat model-Maxum ??-42. MFRD-7-25-1989.

Re: Will this tow ok?

Appears as having only one brake axle...and those look like 2500 lb. axles to me. And 14 inch tires would flat scare me with a 250 Sundancer perched above them. If that trailer has been sitting outdoors for any length of time without proper yearly maintenance, I would be willing to bet the master cylinder is frozen or full of rust, as will be the brake lines and wheel cylinders. That trailer is going to require a thorough inspection before being put into service. Better have a pro lift the boat onto the trailer. Those bunks in their current configuration look way out of spec for that hull shape.

Also, you should expect that boat to weigh not a pound less than 6000 when it is ready for the water.

Edit:

The more I study those pictures...and please understand pictures can be deceiving because there is a loss of 3 dimensional perspective...I am more and more convinced that the trailer is not going to carry your boat properly.

Take a look at the "correct" trailer set-up and compare to what you have in front of you. There is more reinforcement in this example. This trailer appears more robust in its design.

Re: Will this tow ok?

What makes you think them are 2500 pound axels? The few different trailer places Ive talked with actually told me that usually a 5 lug wheel with 14 inch tires on them are most likely a 3500 pound axel. Also what makes you say to expect the boat to weigh not a pound less than 6000 when it is ready for the water? The specs state that it weighs 5100....

I would tend to agree. 25 foot boat on a trailer is a big thing. Mine is 25 and its huge on the trailer.

Re: Will this tow ok?

Too many variables. For example, I have 5 on 4-1/2" 13" wheels and my axles are 3500 lbs. Crawl under the boat again and look more closely to see if there's a narrow metal tag around one of the axles with some data on it. Generally, a trailer up to 7000lbs. will take a 2" ball and anything over will have a 2-5/16" ball. Also, it doesn't appear you have a reverse solenoid on the brake actuator since that requires a five-wire electric plug, but I doubt you have fully hydraulic brakes. If you truly have 3500lb. axles and adequate tires, it should be able to handle a 5000lb. boat as long it has brakes.

Wow, its an oldie as well....LOL. Try calling bayliner - maybe they can dig up some old records for you. Or google Maxum, fiberglassics.com, etc. There is data out there you just need to spend some time looking.

Of course 5100 isn't the right weight. Re-read post #12 again. Or, you could just weigh it!

Whatever you were told is probably right. The PO shoulda known. Or, you could have a reputible dealer inspect it and then you'll know for sure.

Re: Will this tow ok?

13" or 14" or 15" rims, lug patern and brake axles don't tell the whole story. My 7,000 lb trailer has 4 1/2" x 5 lug pattern hubs, had 1 brake axle (added disc brakes to both axles) and has 14" wheels (wish they were 15", but they are already modular rims), and are ST 215x75 R 14 tires.

My trailer looks smallish under my 25 1/2 foot boat, but has been doing the job since new in '92.

The only way to know is get the trailer info or measure the bearings, me thinks.

Ok let me ask this of you guys. Lets assume I have 3500 pound axels, what would switching over to 15 inch rims & tires do for me?

Re: Will this tow ok?

Ok, I just went out and measured the drums and it has the 10 inch drum brakes on it. From all of my research and talking to different trailer places I am going to conclude that it does in deed have twin 3500 pound axels on it. This should be able to get me through this next season at lease until I can order a brand new one?

Gives you more safety margin for the tires but does nothing for the total amount you can tow.

By the way, I did go up to 15" on mine because I did want to be a bit taller to get out of my driveway and I wanted the margin.

By the way, by the time you put in fuel, water and gear, you are going to be pushing 6000" for the total load. The trailer likely weighs over 1000#. Personally, I would be getting a different trailer.
