Re: Winch Cable or Strap?

could you retry the link sir? Not working for me.

The link not working is because of iboats or iboats website issue. It use to only happen with boats dot net turning the link into ww********.something else. Now it's starting to do the same thing with other vendors. Just like the picture attaching thing is getting real flaky (on/off more off then on). iboats is not answering the questions being asked in the website forum so I guess we can just be happy the forum is still working

Re: Winch Cable or Strap?

I hate the straps on 3 of my trailers. I'm always pushing on the strap to keep it from folding over. I never have to touch the steel cable on the big trailer - it feeds on by itself. When I pull it out I always pull with the hook.

Just keep your hands off it and no more sore fingers.

I have to agree with this one, straps are more trouble then their worth. They rarely track straight, they slip on the drum and can give a false tight feeling when cranking down on the winch too. With a good cable, you just crank the boat on and forget about it.
Buy a good quality cable, stainless if possible and you'll be fine.
A strap my be fine for a 500lb jon boat but its a royal hassle for a heavier boat that you can't manhandle around to keep the strap inline with the winch just perfect ever time.

Strange... the STRAP on my 10,000 lb 30' cruiser tracks straight, NEVER slips, tightens easily and never gets loose... works perfect every time and I certainly don't ever wrestle my boat by hand.

Methinks that if you've had so much trouble with a strap there is more at play here.

Cable may be fine for a 16' boat but when it gets wedged in between other cables and you have to dig it out with a screw driver after pulling out a heavy boat like the one in my signature, then you appreciate how nice straps are!

I've tried a strap, now going back to cable, but Amsteel this time. For another thing, I don't like the normal means of attachment of the strap to the drum.

The drums are different BTW. A cable needs a larger diameter to wrap around.

When I replaced my winch towing a 16-foot ski boat, I made the mistake of thinking 'aircraft cable' would do well. Being plastic coated, it seemed safe, nice and easy on the fingers. Big mistake. The plastic scrubbed off, got gnarled up in the spool, and the cable would not wind or unwind. Pulled it out with a come along and am now happy with a nice smooth strap. --Peter

Cable here. Got tried of fighting with the strap to keep from folding over on itself. Went back to cable after thread on the hook connection let loose while pulling up the ramp.

Any cable that is frayed to the point of you getting "stuck" is shot and should be replaced.

When I was a green kid at the shrimp boat yard they told me those frays were there to keep your hands from slipping
