When you drill the holes be sure to spray the drilled metal with the cold galvanizing compound. After dried I would then slbber some bearing grease on the holes for extra protection.
You could also eliminate the space between the lower bolts and tongue by installing a plate on the top of tongue before bolting down the winch post.

I still like the added braces thing tho as the weakest link of that winch post is the sheet metal around the lower aft bolt. In a front end collison event.

Expidia,

My trailer is a 1995. I installed the u-bolts three years ago. Since then the winch post has not moved at all. On my major annual fishing trip I trailer the boat on a logging road that is fairly rough in spots (about 40 miles each way and takes about 2.5 hours) and my fix has held up well.

Glad to hear that Shoreland'r is rsponding to your concern.

Funny you mention cold galvanizing compound because I just picked up spray can of it in Home Depot about an hour ago. I asked the paint guy if there if they carried any touch up paint for galvanized metal and if I needed to prime the metal first and he handed me this can of Rustoleum cold galvanizing compound and said no need to prime with this stuff.

Good tip on the grease and the plate would work but I also picked up a couple of lengths of 1/2 galvanized pipe too.

I might go that route but braces on the back and front at 45 degree angles will give much more support.
