Windows ----- bla! I won't sink another dollar into Microsoft. I'm a Unix/Linux user. I use Linux at home and it runs good with no dreaded reboots all the time. :)

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

Anything built on the 2K kernal (Win2K, XP) is your best bet for stability so long as you have plenty of memory (256 MB or more), 600 Mhz processor or better and compatible hardware (i.e., 2k drivers). The 2K kernel is a true 32-bit OS and is more fault tolerant.

Today, it makes almost no sense to upgrade your OS w/o buying it pre-loaded on a new machine. Desktops are so cheap today that you can get a good Dell for $499+ and an OS upgrade would cost $100 plus your time.

NEVER, EVER, EVER, buy "cheap" memory. Studies show that a great deal of the memory out there is NG - fails unpredictably and causes lockup. You reboot and it works again - for a while.

Here's a real like example. One of my clients has a Gateway that would lock up randomly. I pulled the cheap memory Gateway uses and replaced it with Crucial and it hasn't locked up since.

Don't buy too much into the processor speed hype. Your processor is idle most of the time waiting. Your bottle necks are your hard drive, graphics card and memory. Invest in plenty of good memory, a fast hard drive and a good fast, mainstream graphics card. (bad graphic drivers are also a big cause of crashes)

Just my 2 cents

I still use windows 95, and have very few problems with it.. I just can't get onto SBN's chat site, my VM is not good enough......other than that, it's fine..........I don't use it for games or anything like that..........

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

Tried them all. New puter came with XP. All compatible hardware and most current drivers. Nothing would work. After countless hours, and tech support calls, and 2 gurus working on it, I trashed XP and put in ME.

With ME, all works well, no crashes. I went 6 months without a reboot this spring.

Everyone I know had trouble with ME, but not me.
I have started playing with Linux a little. Will go that direction some day soon.

I build all my computers now, and I don't use cheap ram either.

I typically buy Crucial ram and use Asus mainboards.

XP is extremely stable. Has never locked up on me. It is a little over-built for the common user however. It is a large system.

H.

ME has worked good for me.

I know people that are running XP that can't get into a java chat room.

Pros and cons with each I guess.

Microsoft blows. The illegal free copies I have were to expensive for the quality. I use FreeBSD and have for years with no problems. And tteal, my daemon owns your penguin :)

SBN, it means the computer is FAST!. However if you want to play games with good graphics and/or watch videos (ie: DVD) on your comp you might want to look at a better video card. Also XP won't have the benefits on this sytem since the processor is not true 64 bit.

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

SBN, If I were in the market for a new machine I wouldn't buy anything but a Dell or make my own. If I tried to make my own Dell level machine these days it would cost me more than to buy it from them.

You get good high quality components at a low price with Dell. They have the scale to buy the best components cheap.

Integrated graphics cards means that the graphics card is part of the mother board (the main circuit board) not a separate card in one of the slots. Integrated Intel graphic cards are ok - they are mainstream so pretty reliable. Should be fine for what you want but if you don't mind paying a little more upgrade the card to Dell's latest offering (Rage Pro I thik)

Shared memory means that the graphics processor uses part of the main system memory for itself. Separate cards have their own (much faster) memory. Hence, the cards are much faster and don't rob the system of resources.

128 is way too small for a system running XP. 256 min. - Studies show that when you add more than 128 on a 98 machine it slows the machine down! Yup, the OS can't use more than the 128 effectively! Not true with WIn2K and XP.

Avoid the "value" hard drive. HDD speed is critical to system perforamce. a HDD is on the order of 100K X slower than the system memory - Upgrade to the fastest HDD they are offering (7200 RPM)

Celerons have a dumbed-down FPU (Floating Point Unit) which makes the math intensive applications slower. CAD, Games, video editing, photo editing, etc. Not important for Net and MS Office type use.

Now, what I do, is select one or two speeds below the current high end offering on a full Pentium and invest the savings in the other components.

Finally, invest in the very best monitor you can afford esp a 17" or better flat panel. That makes a real difference in you life.

Oh, and get the best keyboard/mouse they are offering too. That also makes a difference in your life. Processor speed adds little value for the cost - invest the savings in things that make a difference.

As always, JMHO

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

BTW SBN, if they can't get into a java chat room they most likely have their security setting set too high and it's preventing the java script from running. They need to lower their settings....

The favorite machine in our house is DOS/W
IN 3.11, the others are win95, nt4.0, win98, win98se, win2000 pro, and xp pro. But my wife and both kids always want the oldest unit, must be all those games on it!
Richard
