Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

Mac G4 dual processor.
Mac G4 Titanium Notebook.
OS: MacOSX

Fast. Reliable. Easy to use. OSX dosn't crash. No hacks. No security holes. Haven't had a virus on a Mac since 1995.

I can also run windows on the machine. Even though these days it is just as cheap to by a new computer that runs only windows.

Take a look at the Mac and you will see what windows will look like in two years.

I'm an art director, so I need the machine that is the industry standard, and can seemlessly move around 200mb files.

My kid has a Gateway 300. Not a bad little computer for the price.Running windows XP (which is like Mac OS8) Pretty reliable little machine.

But the integrated video was a real pain last Christmas when I had to upgrade the video card. The Gateway 300 only has PCI slots. And then the only card that would fit was a low profile video card. I spent two months looking for such a card. I finally found one on a dusty back shelf at a Comp USA (the customer service at CompUSA is another story)

To Gateway's credit, they refunded me the price of the card. Apparently alot of other people were having similar problems, and I solved it for them.

I have to agree with R. Spencer also. I have had Dell computers in the house for the last 6 years. Never had a problem, their customer service has been great and I like the fact that they are easy to upgrade.
BTW - I am running ME and love it.

I can't justify the cost (for personal use) of a G4, and I'm already drooling into my keyboard when looking at the G5.

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

Macintosh has, in my opinion, always been the best quality computer on the market. I mean, after all, they are the true inventors of the basic windows layout anyway. Microsoft stole it from them way back when. They are also better at graphics because they are graphics based. That's why they are the industry standard for photography. They see an image as an image. Whereas, IBM compatible machines see the image as text it has to decode to produce the image. The only complaint I have about the Macs is software availablity and not having a right click on the mouse. Other than that I would prefer a Mac. I've used Win 3.11, 95, 98, 98Se, 2000pro, and Xp pro. I like the XP pro the best of all microsoft's products. Not only is it very stable, it is easier on your eyes than the classic windows versions. For Now I have a PC running XPPro. A LOT cheaper than a comparable Mac. I built mine a year ago and it has an Athlon XP 2000+ processor, MSI Ultra ARU mainboard, 550Watt Antec Power Supply, 256MB Ram, 44x Cdrw, Dvd Drive, 2 Ata 100 Western digital Harddrives(both 7200 rpm, one 30 gig and one 120gig), one removeable harddrive rack used for putting music files on truck computer, Geforce 4 Mx440 graphics card, TV Tuner/Capture Card, 17inch monitor, 9 USB, and 12 internal fans(one on chipset, graphics card, two in power supply, two case fans, one in removeable rack, one on the processor, and two on each harddrive cooler. It also has Bluetooth and onboard Raid controllers. So basically, It sounds like a jet when you turn it on and really smokes. I run both Win XP and Win 98 SE on it. I use it as my entire multimedia center in my room. It serves as a CD player, mp3 player, Dvd Player, TV, Vcr, and TiVo. It's connected directly into a Kenwood Stereo Amplifier Driving Two 12's and two 6's and two tweeters. All in all I probrably have $2000.00 in it. It runs XP Pro like a Pro. Have had it on here since I built the computer and haven't defragged it yet. Still runs as fast as the day it was built(insert knocking on wood here ;) ). Needless to say, I'm very happy with it so far :D .

James

PS: For those of you who can't use java, try going to www.sun.com to get java for your machine.

been selling DEC/Compaq/HP Alpha systems and
spares for 12yrs now.
run NT4.0 workstation for my
biz on an Alpha 600mhz personal workstation.
1G mem, 36G SCSI 10K hdd.... a real smoker.
Linux will be next (when I have some spare time).
the wife's Gateway P4 2.4ghz is maybe half as
fast and reliable (WXP). my workstation has 100%
uptime for 18mo., her's crashed twice in first 2
months. previous advice re: cpu speed is excellent!
hardly any programs or websites run close to that
fast, so you never realize potential, or rarely.
motherboard
memory
graphics
then CPU speed IMHO.

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

Mellow - The Alpha should have ruled the world! DEC screwed the pooch! They had no idea how to market them. No wonder, the VAXs always sold them self w/o real sales forces. I know lots of ex-DECies and their demise was very sad.

I put in a lot of mission critical Alpha servers that do $3 Billion a year in transactions. Those particular systems were installed over 5 years ago and still have zero down-time.

James, actually the GUI (graphical user interface) was designed by Xerox at PARC (Palo ALto Research Center). Xerox had no idea what to do with it. Steve Jobs took a tour of PARC one day (after the Apple II was out) and they showed it to him. Jobs then suckered Xerox in to letting him bring his whole engineering team by for a look. That lead to the Lisa which lead to the Mac. The rest, as they say, is history.

That's why Apple could never sue Microsoft over infringement :p

If Apple had not been so short sighted by keeping their OS and hardware proprietary, they would be Microsoft.

amen Raplh... was personally involved in all of
it over the years. bad marketing is an understatement!
Itanium is supposed to replace the Alpha chip now?
like Msoft could make a 64bit version of windows
actually work... never gonna happen.
HP should convert to true64unix, but all i see is
them trying to upgrade all my high end users to
the latest HP (not alpha) offering.
memory lane... how boring! LOL

SBN,
I'd buy the bare bones $399 PC and do my own
upgrades. haven't compared motherboards, but
think they are the same. you and me can buy
the extra memory etc. pretty dang cheap these
days. brand new 17" tube was $109 at wallyworld
recently. if you buy the pre-built one from them,
they are totally responsible for operability.
other than memory, make sure any add on parts
you buy come with the drivers! will save a lot
of exedrin.
good luck,
M.Y.

Would the high-end 2400 be a pretty good all-around system then?

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

SBN, I would go with the "Mainstream Performance" with the following changes:

If you are not going to use the DVD step down to the [48x CD ROM Drive [subtract $30]

Step up to [Dell™ Enhanced Multimedia Keyboard [add $20 or $0.75/month1]

Step up to [Planar PE171BK 17in Flat Panel Display (Non-Dell) [add $330 or $10/month1] Dell Recommended]

Step down to [1 Year Limited Warranty plus 1 Year At-Home Service [subtract $139]]

That brings the price to Dimension 2400 Pentium
$1,258

And you get a flat screen that will make a real difference in your life (trust me on this one)

Good luck

Re: Windows - what version do you like best?

I wouldn't ever go to a local guy for a built one. I'd build my own and only if I had special components I needed or wanted for some reason. I used to build my own when there weren't any dominant makers like there are today and none had the top-of-the-line components I wanted. That's all changed with Dell and to a lesser extent Gateway, HP/Compaq, etc.

A local guy can't buy the components cheap enough to compete with Dell. Dell pays 1/10th of what a local guy would pay for the same item.

Besides the local guy isn't going to help you at 2am if you are having a problem or replace your monitor a year later. Who know if he will even be in business a year later

Take a look at these.

http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm

Top quality current model components, that work well together.
And fast, at a pretty decent price.

The new cases are a bit flashy, but most of their buyers like them.

Ordered mine with small cheap HDD, then added a 7200 133ATA HDD.

http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm
