Windshield replacement $12,000 . . .

My friend has a 1996 Formula model F252 (I think).

A branch fell on his left side window and now Taylor Made who makes the original winshield wants 12k to replace the whole thing.

This window has a curve to it so one can't just walk into a glass shop and have a new one made up.

If he could get the window from a boat salvage yard he would install it himself.

Anyone have any ideas on how he could locate another side window for this boat or a place that could make him up that side panel.

Thx

seeing the frame is crushed. needle in a haystack. i understand Taylor Made situation, you are lucky they still have the glass mold. it's setup cost that is the big expense to make just one piece

you might get lucky here: http://www.laniermarine.net/index.html

Thanks Tashasdaddy. I'll give them a call. I don't think the frame is crushed. I check with him but I think the branch went through the window only.

Taylor Made wants to sell him the whole windshield because of the liability of him putting in 1 section himself. As the boat flexes especially at 50 mph that section could fly out and hurt someone I was told.

New larger boats now use some type of plexiglass instead of actual glass.

It a common problem and boats get totaled over it buy insurance companys because of the cost of glass OR you can not even get it at all

It one good thing about the classic style boats still made with the straight panels

so do some old boats. my aristocraft has plexiglass. maybe ya have hit on an option. i don't know for a fact, but perhaps someone could fit some plexiglass on to it for ya, maybe talk with yer local glass company and see if there's other options... wouldn't be oem, but it might get the job accomplished w/o spendin 12K.....

Use plexi. You can cut it and even bend it if needed.

Re: Windshield replacement $12,000 . . .

Thx for the responses . . . That was the first thing I said to him is just have a plastics company fabricate one for each side, so they will match. A search turned up a bunch of them.

But he only wants OEM!

I saw a similar model and it's more of a bubble shaped rather than a curve as he originally said to me. From seeing this shape, it would be tough to fabricate.

I think the best place to look is to get in contact with a boat salvage yard that also has access to a computerized database of junked boats and parts.

I gave him the web address and ph. of the company that the first poster noted.

Re: Windshield replacement $12,000 . . .

What about this. Seems like a very good price. http://www.iboats.com/boat-windshields/curved-windshields-options.html

Yes I am a newb so hope this is not way wrong.

Thx, I sent that link to him. $1599 for the whole windshield seems pretty cheap.

If it were me . . . I'd toss that one on and sell the boa!. Next time if I were him the first thing I would buy is "insurance". It's cheap for what it protects. My rig is around 15k and I don't think the insurance runs more than $175 a year!
