Well as the time grows nearer, I'd like to prepare myself for Winterization and make sure i have ample time to order, tools, fluids gaskets etc, And I have a few questions.

First, when I pull the drive to inspect the gimbal, etc, what all gaskets do I new to replace, can I get a whole kit? ALSO, my boat has a remote fluid reservoir, will there be a line to the drive that will need to be disconnected and will I need to drain the reservoir or can I just drain the drive and it will flow out of the reservoir too?

Second, if I find my gimbal bearing bad how big of a project am I looking at? Do most freeze in place? Also, what's the best way to get them back in? Can I get a tool, or something like a bearing driver?

Third, where can I find a quality alignment tool without spending a fortune? Are the ones you find on eBay etc acceptable?

Most of yer questions are already answered up in the Adults Only section, at the top of this forum,...

The drive gasket set is 18-2619-1 here at iboats...

Re: Winterization questions

I was just curious about the remote reservoir line. Is there a hose clamp etc holding it on or what? Do I need any extra parts since mine has the remote? I couldn't find anything describing that so far as removal and reinstall with a remote reservoir or if it's any different?

Could someone provide me with the service manual for my drive? I know at one point Don sent it to me but i forgot to save it and now the old link in that thread said it was deleted? This is my serial number 0L036470 All help is greatly appreciated

There is a quick connect on the inner transom assembly right next to the fresh water pick up tube, its a press and pull

Re: Winterization questions

When you pull the drive does it not have to be disconnected? To inspect the gimbal etc?

No there is a (sorry lingo is wrong here) auto shut off valve when you pull the drive. Starboard side small black valve, stops the f;uid from draining

Re: Winterization questions

Ahh i see i was wondering because i watched vids of people pulling drives and never understood how fluid flowed into the drive unless there was a hose but never saw any disconnected.

With that gasket kit for the drive, what all gaskets come in it? Is it the main mating gasket, the two o-rings on the drive shaft and what else? there seems to be a large rubber gasket and two other medium sized o-rings?

The large rubber gasket fits into the drive bellows to make a seal. Use a little bellows cement to hold it in place when putting the drive back on. They have been know to get knocked out of position. One of the larger O-rings is for the sea water passage.

Just put this info in your signature file and it won't be a problem

IE: Boat type
1998 Mercruiser 4.3 190hp alpha one

Anyone got a manual for the drive they don't mind sharing?

Re: Winterization questions

Dont' ignore your impeller. If you're gonna pull your drive, it makes sense to replace that as well.
And inspect the bellows as well.
Read the service manual before you do anything else, it will help you determine what pars you'll need to purchase, as
well as any additional items like certain lubes, adhesives, sealers, etc. depending on what you are going to tear into,
Not to mention any special tools. Someone should be able to point you to a service manual for your drive.
You might even consider constructing some type of stand for your outdrive. It's heavy and awkward to handle once it's free.

Login then go to your 'settings' at the top of the page. There you will find the place to edit your signature.

Re: Winterization questions

Ok is it best to replace the impeller every year? How hard is that to replace? Don't you just pull the lower foot off the drive and replace it that way? Can the impeller not be replaced with the drive on the boat?

I cannot seem to get that website to load, will I be able to download it off of that site like the 4.3 engine manual someone gave me? I like to take them to printing companies and have them printed. Rather than scrolling through 900 pages?

Re: Winterization questions

You have an Alpha I Gen II outdrive, those impellers are usually good for 2-3 years use compared to the older style Alpha impellers.

As far as your engine goes, instead of saying 98 4.3, you should get the serial number and post it just to be certain it is a 1998 engine. Just because the boat is a 98 doesn't make the engine a 98. This is especially important as the 98 has a different service manual than a 97. Lots of different things that year.

Re: Winterization questions

That is a 98 engine, and you use service manual #25 for the engine. (see link Series 60 posted)

Might want to add that to your signature as well. Something like this:

!998 Bayliner 1850SE
1998 Mercruiser 4.3 190hp Alpha I Gen II
Engine SN 0L036470
Drive SN 0L130582

To edit your signature, just to to the top right of the page and click on "Settings"
Then on the next page on the left side click on edit signature.
