At this point, I cant really turn back on this motor. It was a poor deal, and ive spent much more than its worth at this point. Im surprised it work last time with all of these rotted wires..... There electrical tape over pretty much every single wire when i bought it, so I decided to rip it off more recently when I failed to install a kill switch. I found alot of the wires were just strips of metal with the "occasional insulator over it" Down below are the best wires I found. I really dont feel confident with the motor and these wires, so I stripped them all out, than I tried to rewire it, but it failed, wouldn't work, I sorta jerry rigged it. But now I want it solid, and to do it the right way. Ive cut all of the wires on the "Big Black Plug" on the side going twords the motor, because they are all rotted out and oxidized.. The ignition switch is fine. So im looking for a wiring diagram for this motor, FR sent me one for a similar motor, but I was wondering if anybody had an exact diagrams of a 1969 Evinrude Bigtwin 40 40953R? Also how can I test my solinoid? I tested from the positive battery cable to the soilnoid, and ground, and got 12v, then I tested the other side of the sol. that has a cable connecting to the starter, and I got nothing with the key turned. Help!!!!

I would try to find a new wire harness. I doubt they still make them but cdi or this site may have an aftermarket.

When you try to repair that one you will not be able to find good wire to splice to. It's junk.

Additionally, trying to make your own will prove very challenging.

Just one guys opinion

There are some good parts of the wire left twords the black plug, the wire there is accutally usible, Im positive id have enough room to splice, but If I can find a harness for cheap, il get it! Any ideads where id get one, or if anybody can find one? not sure what to look up?

I'd try the salvage yards in the sticky. Cdi electronics may have some. They used to make them. I think this site is a cdi dealer, they could help maybe. Ask a mod?

I am in the same boat! I inherited a 1975 Higgscraft w/a 1975 80hp Evinrude. I just posted a HELP re: replacement key inquiry. I absolutely cannot get into shifter box to remove to get model no. for new key and/or complete replacement. I'll keep in touch, but can you use search term for Higgscraft and see if you can help me? Wiring is basically gone. Must I buy marine-grade (?) wiring, or just wiring at Wal-Mart of a minimum gauge for non-engine electricals. Thanks! John
