I just purchased a Quicksilver tach for my 1987 125 Force engine. The directions have a purple, black, and a grey wire from instrument harness hooking up to send, GND, and IGN. I realize that GND-ground and IGN - ignition, but not sure if send is for purple wire that comes from engine that is labeled Tach? Please advise on proper hook-up. Are their directions somewhere that make thisprocess more clear. I have a Clymer's and the owner's manual, they do not help. Thanks.

GND to ground
SEND to ignition, switched 12v power.
Purple tach wire to the IGN terminal. The IGN refers to the ignition signal.

Here is a diagram.
It came from this website.
http://ww2.tflx.com/PDF/99320.pdf

Tach wiring:

On the back of the tach it goes Grey to send post on tach; purple to IGN post on tach; and black is ground. Puple comes from the ognotion switch and is 12v pos when the key is on. The grey cames fro the motor and is conected to alternater signal. The black is ground neg. from battery.

Sorry to have to disagree with you Rick, but on the 1987 (Prestolite) models, the tach signal wire was purple, not grey.
They changed it to grey a few years later.

The wire from the SEND terminal to the ignition switch may be any color. Whatever was handy when the installation was done.

Re: Wiring a 1987 Force Tachometer

Bump this one back. My 1989 125hp, i'm installing a tach (Faria something w/20pole). Ok, been reading posts here for a while and still need some help.
On the back of the tach there are three terminals:
#1- SIG
#2- GND
#3- BAT
So, I connect the purple wire from engine to SIG, then a good ground wire to GND (from ground block or couple with another ground wire, say, from existing ground on speedo), then, now the confusion. Connect a 12v power source from the ignition switch to the #3 BAT terminal, correct? Which terminal should I connect to on the ignition switch?

(Hey, I move dirt for a living so please bear with me)

Re: Wiring a 1987 Force Tachometer

You want your power wire to come from the "I" or "IGN" terminal on the switch so the power will be off when the switch is off. If you hook up power to "BAT" then the tach will constantly be powered and will drain the battery.

Got it?

Make sure you get a 20p capable tach...I'm pretty sure that vintage Force needs it.

Yea, it has a few settings on the back and can be set for 20 pole. I assume it's the right tach.
