Wiring Battery to Start Boat

I have a 1962 Johnson 19 ft 75hp wood boat. The wires are so messed up I have given up. Is there a way to rig the battery so I can start it in the water, I really want to get the Boat out this summer. Thank You

Hey John,<br />You can hook up push type starter button the same way you jump the starter solenoid only how ya gonna kill it? Do you have a repair manual? You can probably find a wiring harness for it.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Well that was my next question, on the engine it has a choke switch, i beleive if you pull the switch down it will turn off, but not sure

John, this is what I did. Went to the local auto parts store and bought a new ignition switch for a magneto ignition, it had a push for choke and when you turn the switch off it grounds out the magneto. Cheapest fix becausey ou need one anyway and its only one switch verses 2 or 3. I also put in a push button starter switch in the back so I could turn the motor over from the back of the boat. You could do that and have a second push button or momentary switch that grounds the ignition for the couple of seconds it takes to kill the motor, like a weed trimmer or a lawnmower. For wiring in the starter switch run a hot wire from the battery side of the solenoid to the switch and then the second wire to the (S- start) side of the solenoid (little post with wire from old ignition switch). For wiring the kill switch run a wire from the power side of the magneto to a switch then back to a ground (so it will ground the magneto when you hold the button in). If your worried about the choke it is only a hot wire and grounds through the motor.
