I have a 1980 Eureka 17' boat with a 1981 Johnson 90hp outboard on it. I need some giudance wiring the tachometer. These are the wires I see:

From Command Center: Black, Red Purple

From back of Tach: Black, Red, Light Blue, Gray

Would anyone know how this is supposed to be connected?

Re: WIRING TACHOMETER

On the back of the tach you should have a ground, wire to the light, Pos+ from ignition, and a send wire from the motor. The send wire is probab;y the gray. The tach switch on the back of the tach should be set at 12 pole/6 pulse or 6P for that motor. The send wire also could come from the shift/throttle contol box. Use a test light or meter to determine the ground wire, key on pos+. The light wire would come from the light circuit or light switch.

Re: WIRING TACHOMETER

I have a 1978 Evinrude 115. I just installed a tach in mine today. The reason I am responding to your post is that I know Johnson & Evinrude are similar. My advise may get you on the right path.

My shop manual said that the Tach wires were inside the remote control. After inspection, I found that the wires in question were in the male end of a plug sticking out of the throttle/shifter base below the key. If I had the correct plug, I would have been in business. The 3 wires you need are Grey, Black and purple. Grey is the one to hook to the grey wire on the tach. It gets the signal from the motor. Purple is power off the key and black is the ground. The other wire on the tach should be for an internal light. Splice it into another light wire in the dash. When you get the wires connected, the tach should flip to 0 when the key is turned on. If not, check the wiring. Hope this helps.

You can get the tach harness for sure at Cabelas, but check here on iBoats. Otherwise, make your own. Radio Shack has male pins. Pick up three, attach the length wire you need to each, apply heat shrink tubing to each. Plug them in and connect to the tach. Total cost will be about a buck & a half.
