Im having trouble wiring up the starter selenoid on my 1956 30 HP Johnson. I replaced the selinoid, and I believe I have it wired correctly, but it doesnt work. I have power up to the "s" terminal on the starter, but not over to the" i " terminal. I thought it might be the mercury switch, so I jumped the i terminal directly to ground, but it still doesnt work. Any ideas.

Assuming you have 12 volts present at the "Bat" terminal of the ignition switch, the wiring would be:

The "S" (solenoid) terminal of the key switch would connect to one of the small 3/8" nut terminals of the solenoid. A ground wire would connect to the other small 3/8" nut terminal of the solenoid to a ground portion of the powerhead.

The positive battery cable would connect to one of the large terminals of the solenoid. The other large solenoid terminal would connect to the electric starter. That's it.

did you replace it with an OEM or direct replacement part? or is this an automotive solinoid?

I have it wired as Joe indicated, but it is an automotive selenoid. Is that the problem?

How about the neutral safety switch? It should be connected in the ground side. ( black wire from the solenoid, to the switch, then on to ground )

Yes it is.
You need to get a solenoid made for an outboard. Iboats SW622 will work, as well as OMC PN 395419 from you local Johnny/Rude dealer. The internal wiring of the automotive solenoid is different from a marine solenoid.

Re: wiring the starter selenoid 56 30HP johnson

Scuppers, I did the exact same thing, at my local Dealer's advice. I have a 1966 40HP Evinrude, and he told me to use an automotive solenoid (Ford) but just do not connect the ground wire as the solenoid is already internally grounded. I told him the ground wire is coming from the cutout switch, and he said that that would be ok, just leave it hanging and be sure to start the boat in Neutral ONLY...so I spent $28.00+tax for the Ford Solenoid at Schuck's Auto Parts...come to find out the problem was not in the solenoid, so I put the original b ack in just to be safe. Now I cannot return the Ford solenoid and am out $30 bucks...

better to get the correct part, but, you can make it work. on the automotive solinoid the second post (small) is to give the ignition system 12 volts rather than 6, and the case is the ground. you would hook the cutout wire to the case and make sure that it is not grounded. better to get th correct part.
Richard
