Just bought a boat and motor, but the wiring is gone. If some one could help me It would be appreciated. I have a 1969 40 hp Johnson. it has electric start. The wiring from the motor to the selonoid, and from the selonoid to the ignition switch. Basically all of the wiring is so ate up, I cannot tell what goes where, and how the are run. I should be able to splice new wire from the inside of the motor.

Daddycajun

Re: wiring

thank you so much. Now I have to get the fuses and regulator. Is it easy to do? I can wire an airplane, but a boat is a different story.

Re: wiring

You can use a automobile regulator to replace the OMC one. Most commonly, an early 60s Ford Falcon regulator is used. These are not even nearly like the regulators used on later cars with alternators, so don't try to use one of them.

Re: wiring

What about the selonoid. Also do I need to wire in a temp warning light, I don't seem to have one on the boat. Do any of the wires go to the throttle control and gear control next to the steering wheel.

Re: wiring

The solenoid is run-of-the-mill ala Ford as well. Any mid-60's four-terminal (two large posts and two small ones) should work.

Re: wiring

as for the temp warning, do you have a brown wire coming out of a little round hole on the front of the head? if so, thats the temp sensor. if not, don't worry about it.

Re: wiring

k after looking at the motor, it does not have a regulator in the box. and the blue and yellow wires that connect from the generator to the are not connecter to the generator they are capped off with heat shrink. I am assuming that the generator is a 3 to four inch round metal thing in the foward bottom compartment of the motor. I would really like to rebuild this thing just to prove I can. Thanks for your help

Re: wiring

You are correct; you do not need the generator. If your motor is Electramatic shift you will slowly drain the battery while underway. Manual shift only needs the battery to turn the starter, after that it needs no battery at all. You need a good battery to stay in gear with an electramatic shift so keep that in mind. A good deep cycle trolling battery fully charged should keep you on the water all day no problem though.
