I bought a 16' fiberglass boat with a 55 hp Evinrude triumph, I am a weekend mechanic when it comes to automobiles, but have to be honest, this would be the 1st time Ill be tackiling a boat, Ive been looking here at local boating stores to get a wiring manual, to be able to run wiring from the throttle, which has forward, neutral, and backwards prongs to the motor, and to check if any of the wiring that is still connected to from the ignition switch, lights, horn, are correctly still connected, which I'd also like to replace, does anybody happen to have knownledge to help me on this 1 please ? also, is there away I can check the motor to make sure it is still good ? the wiring looked pretty decend in the motor, but then Im not exactly sure what Im looking at.:( thanks

Re: Wiring

Seloc manual (available from iboats) would have the engine wiring diagram...but an OEM shop manual is your best bet if you're going to be doing your own maintenance - got mine at www dot marineengine.com

Re: Wiring

Tell ya' what ya' can do....hop on over to the local library and see if they got any repair manuals....most carry the generic Clymers or Seloc manual. The manuals have wiring diagrams. But be sure to get the manual that covers the hp and year of your engine. If you want your own....iboats carries them in their store. If you want the best manual, OEM service manual, search up Ken Cook Co., or ishopmarine. Both sell reprints of the original service manual. Be sure to have the model number off your engine. You can order on line.

And I'm going to get rid of the second post. No need for two on the same subject.

Re: Wiring

you have an electric shift engine, you need the external wiring harness, it goes for the controller to the big red plug on the engine. you can try to rewire yourself but is a pain. this harness also has the wires to the ignition switch, choke. the switch panel in the picture is for lights , bilge pump etc. you need a hot feed and ground from the battery with a fuse in it. you can tie allyour grounds together, run hot to the switch pole on 1 side and the hot to the light or what ever off the other pole of the switch.

Re: Wiring

Actually, the dash gauges, lights, and any other accessories don't even connect to the engine. Well, they sort of do but only by a 12V hot lead from the starter solenoid through the control harness, throught the ignition key and then to the gas gauge and tach. Any other gauges require only 12V from a separate switch to turn on the dash lights and any other accessories. Normally a separate red and black lead (12V and ground) are routed directly from the battery to a fuse or breaker panel. The various switches get powered from that panel. The red lead should have a master breaker or fuse at the battery.
