I am trying to find out if wobble wheel trailer are only used on fiberglass boats or can you use them with deep V row boats. I see different types of boat trailers and dont know which is the best for my 16' deep V aluminum row boat. If someone could tell me the difference between a wobble wheel trailer vs. rail bed trailer for usage, I would be most greatful.

Thank you

Wobble rollers are typically used for big heavy boats. Your boat isn't big or heavy. Go with a bunk trailer for ease of maintenance.

gee, I have a Spartan roller trailer with only a 14' Lund on it and it works wonderfully. So far I haven't had any more maintenance with this roller than I had with the old Gator bunk trailer.

Seeing that I use one under a smaller Lund I would have to say yes they can be used on small tins. In my area I see rollers used under many Lunds and Alumacrafts. They shine in shallow water ramps and from what I hear saltwater were one wouldn't want to submerge the trailer.

heck I've seen roller trailers used for canoes... They work with any size boat...... Bunks would also work just fine... It's a matter of personal preference.

ITs more about the type of launch you use than the boat itself, if you tend to launch at shallow angled ramps you will want a roller trailer if you launch at steep or deep ramps bunks are prefered.

I generally use a very steep ramp and prefer rollers hands down.... for me a roller trailer is my favorite at ANY ramp

The only problem I have with rollers is if you have a large boat the rollers add a lot of extra weight to the capacity of the trailer compared to bunks

If you have large boat, lets say 5000 pounds, the weight added by rollers is MINISCULE compared to the boat... Even if you add a couple hundred pounds, when you have 5000 pounds of boat, and 1000+ pounds of trailer without rollers, a couple hundred more isn't going to make a difference.

500#s of rollers or 500#s more of gear and fuel? You Decide whats you would prefer?

Re: Wobble wheel trailer vs. rail bed trailer

if we're talking about the 5000 lb boat 50 rollers would only be supporting 100 lbs each at about a pound a piece plus 25 5lb bars and 4 50 lb beams and I'll throw in another 100 lbs of misc.... that's 475 lbs.... BUT now we only need two cross members instead of the 4 on a bunk trailer - 150 lbs and we don't need the 50 feet of 2x6 bunks.... what's that 200 lbs at least and 50 lbs of bunk brackets and hardware... grand total 400 lbs so a whopping 75 lbs difference..... a NON issue

Heck I don't notice any real difference towing my (10,000 lb) boat now with 100 gal of fuel in it versus when I first got it with no fuel engines, drives, genset, fridge, ac, (4) batts, water heater or gear... over a 3000 lb difference

I think the opposite is true. Better on steep ramps, coming and going. I can't figure that statement out.

Rollers are also superior for salt water boating where you don't sink your trailer.

And who has 500 pounds of rollers for a 16' boat?? that's absurd. Weight is a non-issue.

IMO wobble rollers are good in salt environs where rollers often don't roll after a while; wobbles don't jam up.

Re: Wobble wheel trailer vs. rail bed trailer

I did say a large trailer and boat, My boat is 28ft with a 10ft beam and almost 10,000Lbs 500# of rollers would push me over the trailer capacity with 144gal of diesel and all my fishing gear, if you like fighting the safety chain on a steep ramp while your boat tries to roll of the trailer thats your choice, on a shallow ramp I would love rollers ..... on a steep ramp I want my boat to stay on the trailer until I release it.

yours is not the experience of the typical trailer boater nor relevant to the OP's question

I wouldn't be fighting safety chain either as it would still be on the winch under tension.

there wouldn't BE 500 lbs of rollers and a 10,000 lb trailer is a 10,000 lb trailer
The weight IS a non issue On a steep ramp if you aren't winching it on and off the ramp you put the engine forward gear at idle and unhook the winch... then pull to neutral.... easy as pie... OR tie a trip knot in a bow line, unhook winch, climb in the boat and give the rope a yank......
How is this info I provided not relevant???
It isn't relevant because you are talking about a pile of rollers that weighs as much as the whole trailer the O/P would have AND because you are wrong about the trailer weighing substantially more (see post 10 and double the numbers for your bigger boat)

Re: Wobble wheel trailer vs. rail bed trailer

I find some of these responses funny. I have a 14' Lund (dry weight 300# w/o engine) on a Spartan roller trailer that was built for 14-16' boats. It has 8 wobble rollers and 2 keel rollers. This rig is so light that even on a moderate slope I have to give it a little push to get it rolling off.

Getting the boat off a trailer isn't an issue and isn't why I got this trailer. Getting it back on the trailer was my issue. A number of the ramps that I use are very shallow and very flat. There is no way one would float on or power on to the trailer which is why I went from a roller/bunk trailer to a full roller trailer. Much easier to winch up on rollers than it is on bunks.
