can someone tell me, i've looked all over this web site for the answer. I drained the oil from my boat, the lower unit part. It's a 1988 140 IO merc. I put 50:1 two cycle outboard motor oil in it. It was blue? is this the right kind?
Should I remove the wrong oil right away or can I leave it in there for the winter?

Probably you should be using Mercury High Performance gear lube.

Hey Ginny .. yup I/O = Inboard/Outboard. Inboard motor with a drivetrain that is outboard (outdrive). I guess you could leave the oil in there .. I don't suppose it would eat any seals or cause any harm .. just don't try to start your motor with that oil in there. If it were me, though, I'd go ahead and winterize now with proper oil.

Actually, I would get it out of there right now.
Drain it down well, refill with gear lube, run it on the muffs in gear for 3 to 5 minutes, then drain it down and replace the gear lube.

Next season, take a short test ride on the lake, then pull the upper plug and insert a wire into the hole and remove. The wire should be covered in gear lube. If it looks milky in anyway, you will need to have your lower unit tour down and resealed.

DAVEF

Are you going to buy here a new lower unit next spring after it fails?

Thank you so much, all of you. What a friendly bunch of people. You know my gear lube I drained out was milky, it is every year. I used to have help doing these things, so I wasn't sure if the oil I had in the garage was the right kind. Ginny

If it is milky every year, there is a seal problem and now that winter is here, it would be a great time to have news seals put in the outdrive, otherwise it will fail. Just hope the is no damage at present, but delay will only make things worse.

For sure you need to fix it as soon as you can or you will have a big problem soon. Tim

Yes, Brad, that was my plan. To tell her to leave the oil in the gearcase and then buy her a new one since this one needs new seals.
