you do have the keys now, right? He owes you the boat or the 4k. Don't get stupid about it, but don't say you "forgive" him of the debt, even if you have to write it off on your own books.

And yes, if he doesn't pay you did lose that money. If it was $4k cash in the pot, you one, and he pulled it out would you not say you lost that 4k?

Wow that stinks about the boat, hope you can figure it out. Im just interested in someone who has 4k to lose on poker. I play with my friends and family with coins, $1 max, and if i lose a $1 I feel like crying. I wish I was rich enough to be able to wager my boat, but yet again I would hate to see it go. :(

Let me help ya out man...

Ring, Ring...

"Hey this is Bubba1235. Just thought I'd swing by this afternoon and pick up that rig. Be by in a few minutes. OK, bye."

When you pull in his driveway...

"Man it sure is great of you to stand by your word. You know there are some guys who might have waffled on something like that. You are a true gentleman and a stand up fella!"

As you are getting in your truck with the boat hooked up...

"Maybe we can go fishing some time?"

You might not want to add that last part, but, as long as the bull was flying...

Have fun!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I don't know if I could play it that cool, but that's the way to play it.

Unless you've already let the guy off, he owes you a boat. Maybe after a day or so he'll realize it. He was a big man when he threw the keys on the table, now he just looks like a lil pr**k. Surely his buddy will shame him into doing the right thing.

This is why there is no such thing as a "friendly" game of poker.

Don't waffle on your end Bubba....take the boat but be civil about it. If he puts up a big whine and dance around it...ask him what his reputation is worth....because losing that is going to hurt more than the loss of a $4k boat?
If he mans up...keep the boat for a few weeks, let me him learn his lesson, then sell it back to him for $1000.
Lesson learned on his behalf...he will think twice next time....you get something out of it....and everybody gets a bit of a break from hard feelings.;)
Good Luck and keep us posted.

I think I would spend a few c notes and place classified ads in all the local papers for a couple weeks.

Simply state his name in large bold to get attention, followed by is "fails to pay his debts".

He'll pay more than $4000 in the end.

I have to disagree with ya Bubba. I think as time passes he'll be thinking that you've let him off the hook. As I see it you are already late in collecting.

Cheers man!

I bet the others who had money in that pot are just as pissed as you are.

Be sure to let us know how it turns out. If the guy ends up keeping his boat, let us know; I'm sure a few of us will be at your next poker game.. boat keys in hand ;)

I am not a gambler but I have known a few over the years.

This guy was VERY lucky to be playing with you and your friends. In many games he would be in SERIOUS trouble at this point if he hadn't made good on the bet.

Welshing on a gambling debt is like looking for a gas leak with a match .....

When it comes to the law helping you ... forget it when playing illegal poker.

Now you know that the guy is a liar, a thief, and not trust worthy.

If You approach him with threats, he can have you arrested according to the legal law.

Years ago the old players like Doyle Bronson and many others where robbed and would looses all of their money while playing illegal poker, and there was nothing they could do but go on and play another game.

If he had laid down $4,000 in cash instead to call the hand and still lost, I wonder what he would have done ... maybe grab the money ( $4000 ) off the table and run home.

Start your games with a certain amount of money
to enter a game for everyone.

Never play more than table stakes in a hand, and never let anyone
add more money to their stack until the hand is over.

If they do add more money it must be the same amount as the entry fee
each time they add money.

OH ... You could check with the present government administration
and see if there is any more money in the bail out funds to help you
recoup from the bad debt loss to you like others received. :D

The freind who brought the guest should be responsible for the guest's behaviour. The freind or the guest pay up or both are at the very least, banned from the games.

I think 2 others already said it but "Table Stakes" Why anyone would play a game that any large stack can just "win" by having more money is beyond me. You very rarely even hear of games anymore that are not table stakes. I have played for years, live, in casinos, and online and there is no way I am playing a game that some rich guy can sit at and bet me out of a pot that I have the absolute nuts just because he has "a million" dollars to throw around.

just my .02 worth.

Good luck,

Chris

No question, you should act today to get the boat from him. Don't wait another minute. A bet is a bet and he either pays up now or pays up in the country style ways you mentioned but he needs to be reminded of that as he is physically stopping you from removing the boat. Also, it doesn't sound like the trailer was part of the bet.

By any chance could that be considered a verbal contract to pay the said debt ??.
You have witnesses to the debt. :)
