Wont accelerate

Hi all I have 78 Evinrude 115hp I was idling across the lake when I passed someone fishing I gave it gas and it lost power I took it back to the ramp found that it was only running on 2 cylinders same side I switched the power packs from one side to the other and the other side quit so I changed the power pack now all 4 are firing again but when I try to accelerate it dies if I work the carbs by hand it does fine as soon as I try the throttle it dies even the high idle lever makes it die it idles fine I'm guessing that when I try the throttle it moves the arm for the timing and that's what is causing it to die something in the timing the boat was running fine before that never had any issues with it

ok so i changed the plugs and cleaned up some wires that were corroded it runs alright until ya put it in the water then its back to the same thing as soon as you give it gas it dies i did try hitting he choke when it started to spit and sputter and it cleared right up i am changing the fuel pump water separator and filter and see if that makes a difference any other ideas id love to hear them thanks

When were the Carbs last rebuilt?

I have only had the boat about 2 months it has ran flawlessly until the power pack went bad the thing that throws me is it will run right up to 5 grand out of the water or with the motor trimmed up as far as I can and still have good water flow as soon as I drop it down it wont run as for the carbs I'm not real convinced its carb issue but believe me I will go thier if need be. I do now that the boat came from the original owner its a 78 procraft bass boat and from what I can tell he took pretty good care of it the motor itself looks brand new no leaks anywhere super clean so its gonna be a tuff one to track down im gonna put fuel pump filter and water separator on it tomorrow and see what happens if the dont fix it im probably just gonna take it to the shop and let them figure it out

It will rev up to 5000 RPM in neutral running on 2 of 4 cylinders.----So your test means nothing here.----Post your compression test numbers.----And check for STRONG spark.----Good spark on that will jump a gap of 7/16" on a test device !-----Easy tests to do.----If you can find a shop to work on this old motor it will be $100 / HR and it could be a shocking amount for simple work.-----Many older boats being dragged to the end of the driveway for the eager bargain hunters today.----Did you at least put in a new water pump impeller ?----Tested the overheat horn ?

it is running on all 4 cylinders after changing the power pack the impeller was changed by the previous owner before i bought it like i said it was very well taken care of and i do have a shop that will charge me 50 dollars to check it and see whats wrong with it if i cant find the problem i was only asking for some places to look not someone to fix it for me and i thank you for your suggestions and i will check the compression and spark before i send it off to a shop .

Yes they are on separate sides of the motor be kind of tuff to mix them up I did compression check 100psi all 4 cylinders I don't have the spark tester to check gap but I have an inline tester and I do believe I found the problem the one side stays almost purple all the time the other side goes almost no spark at all when I hit the throttle so I'm guessing the other power pack is no good as well I did switch sides and the problem followed the power pack my next question is it common for both power packs to go at the same time or should I be looking for a reason both went bad like that maybe something shorting them out or was it just coincidence that happened I did put the original one back on and that's definitely no good no spark at all. Sorry I just read that again I don't think you can get the wires to the coils wrong the plug can only go one way one small one is male and one is female then their is one big plug so I don't think you can mix them up they all have a flat spot on them so you cant reverse them

ok so I replaced the other power pack today fired right up didn't miss a beat ran up to 5k no problem at the house tomorrow I will take it on the lake and see how it does ill let ya now if it fixed the problem but I think it did

well it turns out the timing trigger went bad I'm not sure if that took out the power pack or they just went out at the same time but he is waiting on the parts he charged me 325 parts and labor to fix it I don't think that's to bad considering the part is like 280 most places I looked but that's the out come thanks all for your input you will probably see me on here more
