I have a 3.0 4 cyl Mercruiser. Recently completely rebuilt the motor.
In neutral the motor will rev up nice. But once i throw it in gear the engine wont rev up nearly as much. Even at full throttle. Boat is only moving 10-15 mph! What is the problem?

Timing timing timing. 34-36* at full advance, which should be in by 3000rpm. Setting timing at idle is a waste of time, pun intended.

i was told by tyndall marine where my boat has been that the timing is good. They said they checked it at the distributor. Does that make sense? I don't know much about carbs

No. Timing is checked at the timing marks usually found on the crankshaft pulley and little tab or "fins" on the timing chain cover. Port side on a 3.0

Your mechanical advance weights and cams could be stuck from rust. Pull the distributor cap and see if the rotor turns at all. (should move about 20 degrees) It has weights and springs found under the breaker plate that advance the timing at higher RPMs. Or if the springs are broken you are timed to full advance at idle and will get no advance at higher RPMs.

Wouldn't the rotor move as soon as the engine is started? complete long block is new including cams. Not sure about the weights. Where is the breaker plate?

With the dizzy cap off you should be able to rotate the rotor by hand. The rotation is your timing advance movement. The dizzy shaft (rotor sits on it) goes thru the breaker plate, which is where your points or electronic pickup are mounted.

Download the manual for your engine from the adults only section. It's bound to have an exploded view of the dizzy.

If the tech checked timing at idle, its a worthless measurement. Timing should be measured at full advance, which should be in by 3000rpm on a marine engine. Timing should be 34-36* (more than 36* you take a chance on putting a giant hole in the top of a piston), I usually set mine at 35* to be safe. Less than 34* and you'll lose rpms.

If the tech set the timing 10* at idle, and you have 20* advance in the dizzy, you'll get 30* total advance. 4-6* will make a huge difference. It's very helpful to know the actual advance your dizzy is capable of.

Ayuh,... Change the Fuel Filters...

That would've saved me an afternoon of troubleshooting and failed lake tests had I started with that last year when my Starcraft was doing the same thing.
