Whats the by the book method? Plugs are good. It has a points ignitions. Never happened before that I know of. Will keep an eye on it.

What you REALLY need is the Merc service manual #10 for your engine. Ebay is a possibility.
6? BTDC at 700 rpm is By the Book. Be sure you have the dwell set (with new points) before setting the timing. Since dwell affects timing, someone may have changed the points and never reset the timing. Thus creating the problem.

Yes you would.......... The manuals (even the OEM) doen't give you ALL the story. But they do provide the basic information a mechanic needs to do a job.
