Two engines with the same problem. 1976 35hp and '83 50hp. Drained lower unit oil to change. Both okay just dark but won't take more than one tube of oil. Never comes out the top hole, it just won't take anymore. Runs back out all over my hands. Would one of the pumps work? Just can't figure out why it would take the first tube but then nothing on the second. It's like feeding a baby a jar of beets. When it seems to have enough you get it all back.

You get air pockets in there sometimes, especially when it is chilly outside. Turn the prop and they will usually break up.

Will try that. Thanks ezeke. Didn't seem to matter if it was in gear or not.

Yes, it is easier to turn the prop when the motor is in neutral. :D

Are you sure you removed the vent plug and not another screw that you thought was the vent. If the unit can't vent you can't possibly get it full. Since both units have the same (and what would be a very rare problem) I feel you removed the wrong screw.

Ya, what he said! There is no way you couldnt get more in if the vent plug is removed.

Read the whole opening question. He says "Never comes out the top hole, it just won't take anymore."

Been doing these awhile and I know to just take out the slotted screws. Already had lower units apart because of the phillips screw. Yes, both screws completely out.
