Re: worse gas milage
Well, it wasn't a car, but I bought a used 24' GMC box truck from Uhaul to move from California to Minnesota. When loaded, its weight was 17,600 lb., just 400 short of its max GVW.
With a truck version of the Big Block and a 5 speed transmission, it averaged 6 mpg for the 2400 miles. Rarely did my speed exceed 55 mph, and a heckuva lot of times I was in 4th gear doing 40-45 up some hill.
By the way, it is most certainly uphill all the way from California to Minnesota.
The day I left, with my wife driving a Lumina APV, the air conditioner quit. It was 105 degrees in Needles, CA when we quit for the day, and I had to run the freaking truck's heater to keep it from overheating. Nothing to be done with the air conditioner. The compressor had seized up. I solved the overheating problem by removing the condenser from in front of the radiator, but never did solve the mileage problem.
Fortunately, gas was only about $2.50/gal back then, so it only cost about $900 for the trip. I got here, and sold the truck for what I paid Uhaul for it, so it all worked out pretty well.
