:( I bought at an auction a 1975 85 h.p. merc 850. Problem is the harness wires were cut. I did get a new motor harness from iboats. I have also downloaded the wiring diagram for that year motor. My big problem is that a friend gave ne a nice quicksilver single lever sideshifter made in 1992. The shift cable and throttle cable seem to hook up great. The problem is there are 11 wires coming out of the main wiring cable. Most of the wires are multi colored where as the old 78 has solid colors. The colors on the ignition switch going clockwise are y/b red b/y purple black y/r. Can I run these wires to my engine? Can anyone tell me what colors go where? There is also a pig tail coming out of the box and it looks to be for the tach and trim. Or would I be better off going on e-bay for box with that years correct colors? I really don't care to spend gobs of money as I have not herd the motor run. I did give it a comp. test lowest # on the 4 cylinders was 148. Thank you for viewing. Also I do thank you and love the info I have gotten for other things. I do support iboats.:)

Re: Would be gratefull for some WIRING HELP

They went to a standard wire color scheme after the motor was made. Your motor has a battery/ditributor ignition, so you need to connect the purple wire to the white wire, for ign power. Red goes to red, for battery +. Grey goes to the brown wire for Tach signal, black/yellow connects to orange(kills ignition, but unused on your motor). the choke wire is yellow/black(i think, better confirm), and connects to the grey wire. Black to black for ground, yellow/red is Solenoid, and connects to yellow. You do not have any overheat sensors, so those are unused.

I think that is all you should need.

Re: Would be gratefull for some WIRING HELP

Went out the barn to wire the quicksilver controlls in and found allmost all the other motor wires were loosing their insulation. Now to save money I am going to try and rewire the wires myself. The only wires that still looked good were the alternator wires. If anyone has any suggestions for me in this project I would like to hear them. Does anyone know where I can get the wires as I believe I need marine specific wires and the wires look to be of 12 guage. Is that correct and were can I prchase the wire> Would Manards or Home Depo have what I need? There is a whole lot I do not know but I can turn a wrench and I do love suggestions. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Wally, The original wires were of different gauges, but all were marine wire. Marine wire has more, thinner strands than regular wire and each strand is tinned for corrosion restance. Since that motor is already 35 years old, I would just buy regular stranded copper wire of the proper gauge and crimp, solder and shrinkwrap it to the old quick disconnect plug. Mark each new wire with color and function of the original wire, as you connect it.

Visit surplusunlimited.com and price out a new harness, and see if it is still worth the trouble to repair it yourself.

Re: Would be gratefull for some WIRING HELP Again!

Thanks for the info and am re-wiring everything that I can get to. Upon re-wiring I noticed that my coil wire was cut. Now I know you r suppose to unscrew the wire out of the cap, but I do not seem to be able to get the wire away from the cap. After unlocking the lock ring and dropping the cap I tried to pull the cap out of the motor but am unable to do this as I am afraid I will break the cap. What elso do I need to take apart to get the cap away from my distributor?

I would unscrew one of the plug wires from the cap, so you can see what it looks like. They are normal right hand thread. Maybe you could use an fine plier or heavy tweezers or perhaps an easy out to grab the broken wire from the coil, and unscrew it.
