Would you buy this?

I am going to look at this motor today. Apparently all it needs is reassembly and gaskets. Is it worth the challenge? He wants $100 for it as is. Is there a gasket kit available for it and what should I expect for them to cost...roughly....

I have a 1982 Mercury 18 HP motor for sale in peices .
Everything is here including all new electrical components and a marina rebuilt lower unit that is intact.
It has new trigger switch coils etc It is a Canadian model #1018502 sporting a Walbro carbWMC10.
It was running, with compression above and equal on both cylinders at 100 psi.
All parts are here to get it running, save some gaskets .
Parts are readily available for this motor, but I just got too many other projects on the go to assemble it

IMO, if it doesn't run, it is worth no more than a yard sale price, maybe $5 to $10.

If it was running why is it in bits? Why doesn't he finish it?

I would value it at less than nothing.

If it was 'running' why was it taken apart? I wouldn't pay more than what you would consider the parts to be worth.

If the lower unit is in fact in order, I'd expect it to be worth at least that in components.

I agree with the others. A basket case is never worth much. If he will let it go for 10 maybe 15 dollars, and you want a project, go for it. For 100 you can get one that runs.

All good points. Thanks. I emailed the seller again and asked why is it apart if it ran and have ok compression. I'll see how he answers before I attempt to buy it. I dont mind the project as long as it is worth it. I have never seen a 18hp merc go for $100 around here though.

100 psi is low for that motor but the lower unit is worth the price, as it will fit from a 1980-2001 18-20-25hp engine

IF the LU is in fact as he claims. How would you know.

I bought a used car that just needed a starter motor..............once. Learned quickly, but somewhat expensively.

Well, I bit the bullet and picked up the motor. The lower unit was rebuilt a year ago (have bill from marine). It also came with a brand new switch box, trigger, and coil. He also gave me the old ones. And I alsogot the Seloc Manual that covers all 4 of my small Merc outboards that I was going to order.

The pistons and cylinders look clean. No scoring or pitted pistons. He had a high speed miss that he was trying to diagnose. I'll order some new rings and gaskets and put it back together.

I also got 2 new props to go with it as well.

I guess you need a service repair manual OEM merc manual for sure.

If you actually know the year of motor and such. you can sell the parts easily.
the needle is the hardest part to find and prop shaft.
That motor is in parts sold in parts is a good deal. 02

Is the Seloc manual not good enough?

Float needle.
for some reason they are NLA. Go figure.
As far as manual , probly not.
