Wrong Stator from CDI?

Starting to get frustrated.....with my 1988 Mercury 115 Inline 6

I used CDI's diagnostic charts to determine that my old mercury stator was bad and causing hard starting. (no spark on 1-3-5 and problem moved to 2-4-6 when switching stator wires). Old Merc stator # was 398-5454A18

I received CDI stator #174-5456 from my local dealer which is the correct CDI # for my motor. However, the box included a yellow troubleshooting paper inside that referenced CDI stator #174-5454K1. The actual stator had no markings. Upon installing it the motor starts great and idles fine but now I have a high speed miss which I never had in the past. I've done Clams link and sync with no change.

Is is possible that CDI mispackaged the stator and I really have the wrong stator for my engine. The stator seemed to fit my engine perfectly.

Did you change advanced timing marks, or magnet metal chips touching stator . could be carb dirt in jet, weak coils motor works well cold, hot they start to cut.

It's not impossible to get a bad part oout of the box.

They, CDI are pretty good about getting back to you when you call the 800 number and usually answer if you call the regular long distance number.

Someone on the assembly line working to fast not letting plastic harden on coils maybe lol joking , if ohm specs don't jump when testing you should be fine. Plus can't return electronics. Try timing specs or clean carbs .Pumps squeeze test.or what i posted.

Re: Wrong Stator from CDI?

Just looked at the CDI catalog...the 174-5454K1 are for 3 & 4 Cylinder only....it wouldn't interchange because of the number of wires.

Your 174-5454 got
2 yellow wires ( battery charge )

1 blue wire -- switch box I
1 red wire -- switch box I

1 blue wire with a white stripe --switch box II
1 red wire with a white stripe -- switch box II

Maybe 1 black wire ( engine ground )

Currently using a 174-5456-16 on my L6 ( it's for a V6 engine, 16 A ), got the wrong length on some wires...but works fine :) .
Working together with a V6 aluminum flywheel to get some extra amps....

Re: Wrong Stator from CDI?

I replaced my stator and most of the wiring in the system but on high speed runs it was the spark plugs breaking down. They looked excellent but apparently they were not. After replacing those no more high speed missing.

Re: Wrong Stator from CDI?

Just a couple things, if you had a 174-5454K1 stator it would not have enough wires to hook up a 6 cyl engine and since the engine now runs the stator must have fixed part of the problem. Have you checked to see if the original stator was burned out by a bad rectifier of if the bios in one of the boxes was shorted out. Have you tested the system since installing the stator or are you just being quick to blame others, yes anyone can make a mistake we are all human but you remarks on this subject seem to put the problem in someone elses yard.
