Jack,
I haven't done an impeller change on my 89 XP yet, but will soon have to. I will try to look thru my shop manual and see what i can find out for you when i get home tonight-- shouldn't be much difference in where things are attached between the two models.

Are you asking about the bolt that attaches the shift rod to the linkage? If so that is under the bottom carb on my 86 XP150. I have to pull the bottom carb to get to mine.

On my 140 evenrude I removed my lower unit and that was the hardest bolt to line up and reinstall. But here is my remedy. I used a real long 3/8 extension universal and a 3/8 socket. Now when I went to reinstall I used electrical tape around socket taping bolt to it to keep it from falling to bottom of engine housing. Have a long screw driver or a stiff coat hanger to align it before bolt is passed through. The shaft from the lower unit will have to be in the slot so the bolt will pass through. It requires a nice strong flashlight and patience. The most important part is make sure both your control and lower unit are in neutral before installation, and thats the key!

The V6's are much harder to get to than the V4's. I do like Master Brian. Take the bottom carb off the V6's.

Re: XP150 lowerunit removal- Lieutenant

I figured it out--- About 16 years since I was a "boat Tech". Take off both trottle & shift linkages, remove carb
syncro rod after taking both carb plates off the front. Remove lower carb. Remove Shift Rod Lever Pin on port side of motor(under where lower carb was) .I made the mistake of taking the bolt(shift rod lever screw) that is directly front side that basically holds the lever in place. Now you should be able to remove the lower unit following the seloc or OMC manuals. To re-install lower unit--- you may want to remove middle carb for more room to reattach shift rod. I will because of taking the lever all the way off

Thanks for all your comments. This is a great site!!!

Forgot to mention that my XP150 was converted to manual Oil/Gas mix--- NO VRO. So I don't know if other parts may be obstructing for non- conversions.

You got it dude-- and even better, your post and the responses pre-empt all the questions i had about the problem of lining things back up for the re-install when I do mine-- which need to be sooner than later.

Hey wormboy-- the re-install of the lowerunit on my 150xp wasn't so bad. I tryed sending a pm but it's not allowed. Let me know if you would like the process.
