I have aquired a '65 evinrude Yachtwin 3hp.(2 cyl, longshaft).I'am having problems getting it started and keeping it running. The motor was frozen.I freed it up.First off,the compression was low(50lbs each cyl) so I replaced the piston rings (were stuck).Compression is still about 50 lbs after new rings.Do the cylinders need to be honed or de-glazed?
The motor has many new parts installed including the following.Carb re-build kit,new coils/points/condensors,piston rings, sparkplugs, head gasket, impeller, fuel line.
The motor has great blue spark. It will fire for a second or two then stop, but still very hard to start. It's got fuel, spark, compression is questionable. This motor was totally dis-assembled/cleaned internally/de-carbonized pistons, etc.
Any idea's are greatly appreciated. :)

Re: Yachtwin starting problem

Reel,
You seem to have all the bases covered except one.., yes, it would have been a good idea to hone the cylinders before you replaced the rings. The fresh crosshatch of honing removes the glazing and allows your new rings to seat. After the honing of the cylinders, you must thoroughly clean the cylinder walls of all debris and grit, white glove clean. Be sure you measure the ring gap and ring groove clearances per the specs.
