I have a 1990 225 hp Yamaha. There is a problem with the automatic oiler and I need someone smarter than me and my mechanic to figure this out. When there is oil in the tank on the engine, it operates normally but when this oil runs out it does not fill from the resevoir tank. There is oil in the resevoir tank, I have bled it. It can be operated from the emergency switch so the pump must work. The float switch on the engine tank has been replaced without success. My mechanic told me it must be the CDI computer which has been replaced and $1200 later the problem is still present. He now tells me I need a new wiring harness. Does this sound reasonable? Any other ideas?
Currently I am premixing the oil and have the system capped off. It operates fine but I don't like this as a long-term solution.
Thanks!

hahahah
buy a new motor and the issue is resolved.
its faster than chaning parts.
myself I would find a tech that knows WTF he is doing.
that being said its a very simple system.
does your trim guage work ?
all the emergency switch does is complete the transfer pump circuit ground manually instead of the CDI doing it, that tells me the power feed and grounding circuits between the engine and the re,ote tank are ok. has anyone checked the filter in the remote tank? but Ill ask again, does the trim guage work ?
if ya cant solve it I may need a bit o side cash and we can meet in the middle :)

Lot easier to trouble shoot when you understand the system than just changing hi priced parts. I would bet on the defective trim switch or even more common the wiring between the engine and boat mounted oil tank.

yep, my guess would be the trim sender or the level switch in the remote tank or its circuits, by the fact that it works when the manual switch is toggled tells me the power feed and ground circuits are working.
if you search this forum for the bass and wallye article on precision blend its very good.

Re: Yam 225 automatic oiling problem

Thanks for the info. I thought it might be a wiring problem but don't understnd the wiring well enough to fix it (even though I have the wiring diagram).
I don't know that I have a trim gauge. I have a gauge that tells me the trim of the boat but not the trim of the engine specifically. If the engine is trimmed all the way up it won't fill I'm guessing? and fixing this would allow it to fill?

I agree I need a tech who knows what he is doing and probably don't have it. In his defense he has offered to refund me the money for the CDI if he can find another problem that is cheaper to fix - he just can't find the other problem.

Any other thoughts? Thanks for the opinions!

Re: Yam 225 automatic oiling problem

OK, you guys MAY have just saved me. If you did I'll kiss you-or buy you a beer. The article says there is a float switch in the reservoir which signals the yellow warning switch on the LCD on the tachometer when there is less than 1.5 quarts left and to stop transfer of oil to the main tank.
Should have been obvious but I didn't put 2-2 together. That yellow light is always on (at least lately) on my tachometer (even though the reseroir is full). So the float switch on the reservoir, the wiring to the warning light on the tachometer or the warning gauge itself must be broken?? And so it will not allow the reservoir tank to fill the main tank because the system thinks there is no oil.
Not sure which one to start with but I'll mess around and see! I owe ya!
