Yamaha 130 carberator problems?

I just purchased a scout dorado 18'1/2ft. Came with a 2000 Yamaha 130 two stroke. Only 10 1/2hrs. All in off the showroom floor condition. Previous owner winterized it with 1/2 tank of gas and fuel stableizer. Runs and idles pretty smooth. However it wants to choke out when trying to come out of the hole. Have changed: sparks, fuel and water seperator(some grit and very little water goo.), checked fuel filter (almost no grit) On second tank of new gas now and sometimes I can get it to go. By pulling the choke out for about 3 seconds I can get it to plane. Higher speeds (20-25mph) do fine with a little chugging. Oil seems fine and pumping ok. Does this sound like a carb pull and cleanout job? Will I damage the engine by continuing the manuel choke pulling?

Welcome to iboats.

Sounds like you need to pull the carbs. They're probably a bit varnished. With so few hours, the gas must do more sitting than circulating. Stabilizers only help so much.

You won't harm the motor by choking it to get it going. You aren't getting enough fuel delivery. With some motors that inject the oil into the gas, that could mean a lack of lubrication which could cause damage to the motor. But your oil squirts right into the crankcase. It's getting a full dose, so that shouldn't be a problem on that motor. But if the carbs are running lean, then it could be running hot and that can do damage, as well as potential detonation problems that can definately do some damage. Best to address the problem ASAP.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. It's hard telling your family they have to wait to go on the boat because of engine trouble on or new boat, but I will take it in tommorow for service. Thanks again

you will do harm by choking it.
its the same as running with a ruptured diaphram.
not only are you adding fuel by bypassing the carbs. you are running a lean air fuel mix that can cause excessive combustion chamber temps. fix the carbs before ya smoke it. the oil system is designed for the carb calibration. by choking it you momentarily force the fuel mix over rich causing a lean oil flow.
good luck and keep posting

I love it. I have been looking at these boats for over three years now. When I came across this on it was too good to be true. A 2001 with a 130 yamaha on it. Not a scratch. Rides great and is really designed well. Are you looking?
