Yamaha 150 TKRD/cooling

Just bought a 2005 model for my pontoon boat. Testing. Run for a couple minutes with ear muffs. STOP because water not coming out of pee hole. Should it come out instantly or does a thermostat have to open or what. Am I on dangerous ground?

do not run it unless its pumping water.

im not familiar with yamahas but i would say yes, it should come out almost immediately after start up....... the amount of warm-up time varies greatly due to air/water temp so its hard to say when the thermo will open..... but the thermostat ,good or bad, will not stop it from peeing.

a water pump is a lot cheaper than a new eng.

its an easy fix, and takes minimal tools.

a good manual is a must when doing your own work.... if nothing else but for torque measurements and sequences.

im not familiar enough with yamahas to explain it in detail, but you will need to unbolt the lower unit and disconnect the shift linkage then separate the lower unit from the leg to access the water pump...... some people recommend to put an old tire or something under the lu before you try to remove it as they are fairly heavy and do not take punishment well.. 2 people can do the job faster and easier on larger eng--- i learned that from experience.

I am in the same situation! However I noticed at the previous owners house that the motor took a while to pee. Out on the water peed like a race horse, now at my house, doesn't pee off my muffs. I am going to try some different muffs as I had too much leakage around them, so I need ones that fit better. My motor has a garden hose attachment for flushing the powerhead its located on the left side, kind of hidden up under the cowling. I flushed it that way and it took a long time for it to pee, which tells me there are miles of waterways through the motor. You can't run the motor while you are flushing the powerhead only, as there is no water down in the water pump area.
So before you tear into the motor try different muffs! or put it in a BIG bucket.

wadmalaw joe makes a good point about the bucket........ ive read a lot of threads where people advise against muffs for this exact reason, they say the water level needs to be above the pump for it to intake water correctly..... but mine always did fine so i stayed with my way.

with my small obs, 9.8 and 18, i use a 5 gal bucket with a block under it to hold it high enough to work.


even if you get it to pump water i would replace the water pump......... i have read to replace them once a year and some say every other year, but most agree when you buy a used motor it good practice to change it....... along with all the other misc maintenance you are insure of like plugs lower unit lube,etc......

If it has the flush hose attachment you may need to use it and the muffs.

It should start to pee within 1 or 2 seconds of start.

If you don't know how old the impeller/water pump is change it.

I have a 150 4 stroke. When I bought it, It was not peeing. I used the toothpick from my swiss army knife and probed the pee hole gently and it started peeing. I ran it for some time without it peeing and it never overheated. Try probing it first.
As for flushing, I sometimes use a 36 gallon Rubbermaid storage container full of water and it pees there real well.

Probably not, but why take a chance.

I have twin F150TXRD's (2005) and they sometimes hesitate to "pee" right away when running (out of the water with muffs). As you can see from the many replies, this is a common experience (note ... I did not say problem). On several occasions, I have revved the motors (just a little) to get the "pee stream" going. Although that worked for me, I did not feel comfortable doing that on a routine basis. I think most of us make far too much out of this quirky behavior (myself included). I just got over it. Yamaha designed these motors with the convenience of the direct garden hose attachment, and I for one, have decided to take full advantage it. No more muffs for me.

Takes a while and it makes me nervous until it does. I press the muffs against the motor sometimes to build pressure. Of course, if there's a problem, the overheat alarm will go off before any harm is done (assuming the alarms works--how do yuo really know???)
don't run the engine on the hose attachment alone; you'll burn out your water pump impeller.
