Yamaha 1986 70HP Lower unit/Reverse guide

I have a yamaha 1986 model 70HP. I removed the lower unit to replace the pump and put in a new guide which was missing for the reverse lock/hook. Having great difficulty with the bar that goes down into the guide. No matter what I do the gear lever won't budge into reverse. Dismounted the lower unit 7 times to try again, unfortunately without success. The bar is very slightly bent, could this be enough for incorrect alignment?? Thks for any help..
