Hi

I have a 200hp 4st 2008 Yamaha with only 9 hours on it.
It had only done 4 hours last Feb 2008 then it sat in a showroom for a year, when I try to start it she clicks a few times then starts. I have been using a battery booster because the original battery I assumed was low because of the clicking. However yesterday it clicks turns over but refuses to fire and now today it just constantly clicks even with the booster. I have put on a new battery yet its made no difference.
I am registering 12.5v with the new battery but when I turn the key start it dropps to 10v an just clicks. The starter cog is engaging the fly wheel but wont turn or return unless you push the starting cog down, the engine will turn by hand its not seized.

Can anyone help??

A coincidence. maybe. I just bought a new 2007 with a 225 Yamaha 4 stroke. Had her out last week and put 5 hours on. Today I had her out on the lake and at 9.7 hours she dies at idle and will not crank over again. 12v and down to single digits when I try to start. Checked connections, seemed ok. It has a duel battery hook up but I only have the one battery. It should recharge when I'm running, right? I don't know if they put a fresh battery in when I bought it or just charged the original. Luckily the wind was blowing towards the dock and I roped her onto the trailer. I have a 6 year warranty, but it has 9 hours. Coincidence?

I would check for a bad groud --the boat and on the motor. (with NEW BATTERY) A battery is to cheap to guess. i have found the cables on the motor come loose or improper rigging. if the battery switch is installed check it. one bad battery will mack a bad day.

Battery cables and connections. Looking good is not good enough. Take them off, clean and inspect, then reinstall.

The worst offender is where the battery ground cable bolts to the block. You have a tinned copper lug being bolted with a steel nut and a steel shaft screwed into an aluminum alloy block. Sometimes I wonder how that connection ever carried hundreds of amps without rotting away in a week.

Do you know what guys, I was ready to dismiss the battery dirty/corroded suggestions, I though no it wont be that simple, I know what I am doing it will be a relay or something, a warranty claim?!

Well lads it was the bloody battery connections!! I took off the leads ran some emery cloth over the connections and terminals and hey presto it started immediately. Well I will be buggered, {well er no actually}

I am well happy, thanks to all who replied so promptly, my faith is renewed in Yamaha, but not in myself!!

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback, mate. Too often our advice just floats out into the ether and we have no idea whether it helped or not.
