I own a pair of 1991 yamahas 200hp, I been having problems with the oil system in one of the engines, when I run out of oil from the engine tank the alarms go off but the big oil tank does not send oil to the reservour of the engine, at that time I have to stop. When that happens I have to put oil directly to the tank that is located in the top of the engine. I think that tank is call a reservour. If I turn on the gray switch that is located in the front of the engine (where the pistons are) the oil pump from the big oil tank start sending oil to the tank that is located in the top of the egine.
For the last few days I been working with this problem to see what I can find, and today for the first time for any reason the sender from the oil tank of the engine is not turning on the oil alarm, that start happening after I exchange the CDI unit from the other engine. I put back the CDI unit to their original engines and even that I change the CDI unit I still having the same problem.

I will appreciate any assistance with this.

Thanks.

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

hello
a clogged oil filter will cause the oil to transfer slower than its used. a bad float switch can cause no oil transfer. I would be most concerned if the low oil alarm quit working. check the trim sender as well. someplace on here is a rather large well written post on oil failures. do you have any othe non working or erratic indications from the tachs.
careful just switching parts.
its a very simple system. you may wish to purchase a service manual and try to understand how it works. if the remote tank sensor is on or the controller "thinks" its on no automatic transfer either.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

Thanks rodbolt.
The oil tank only transfer when I use the manual gray switch. I have a clymer service book for this engine but unfortunaly they don't have a trouble shooting that covers this area. I took a look on a electrical diagram that I have from this engines and it looks that everything connects with the gauges and the key switches. Your suggestion is that it could be the sender that is located in the oil tank of the engine?
Right now the oil alarm is not working, that happend when I exchange the cdi unit but when I turn the key switch on the alarm sound for a few seconds but does not work for the oil level. I know that is not the trim indicator because I have to remove it a while ago and after that the oilpump was working.
You said that is a simple system, that means that most probably does not have to be anything with the gauges or key switches since it shows on the diagram that some cables goes to the gauges or key switch?
What is suppose to be the remote tank, is that the one that is located in the engine or the big one? and waht is also the controller?

Thanks again

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

hello
ok a quik lesson
the remote tank is the hull mounted tank. it contains a level sensor and a filter and a 12volt pump. the controller on yours is built into the CDI unit. the grey switch is for bypassing the controller or engine tank switches.
if the system will work when the grey swicth is closed the pump and tank wiring is ok. if the switch in the tank is open you should have a yellow light on the dash. if the bulb works. if the switch is open it tells the controller the remote tank is empty why bother transferring. what color are the wires coming from your tank switch? can you make jumper leads if I tell you how and which wires to jump?
post me back and we shall see

Those colors are B/R--BR--L--B. If you tell me how to do it I will try. Right now i dont have the yamaha gauges, i replace them a while ago so I only have the oil alarm.

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

Hello
DUDE
thanks a bunch seahorse.
I knew someone with a memory could find it. alas my noggin is nodding.
wellcraft
unplug the engine oil tank. with the key in the on position jump a wire from the brown to the black. pump should turn on. next jump from white to black pump should turn off next jump from red to black and low oil should sound. the switch in the remote tank should be closed. verify that with an ohmeter. buy the correct gauges. dont jinky rig these engines or they will fail. also you must use the procedure in the service manual to verify the trim sender is working., follow the chart seahorse sent. follow it closely and dont skip steps.
good luck and keep posting
Thanks seahorse :)

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

Hello rodbolt.

I just did everything you said and I did not find anything, also I check the harness from the oil tank and everything looks ok, I use the harness from the other engine and again still the problem.

I follow the steps from the link that seahorse game me, by the way seahorse thank you for the link is a complete explanation of the oil system.

I borrow a cdi unit and put it in my engine and still the same thing also happens with another float.

Could it be something with the gauges or any other thing with key switch or anything else?
Tomorrow I will be giving my best with this problem, please give me more advice to see if I can resolve this problem tomorrow.

Thanks again rodbolt I truly appreciate your help. :)

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

Hello rodbolt.
Ok, the problem with the oil is that when the oil tank in the engine run out of oil the alarms go's off but the oil tank located in the hull does not send oil to the oil tank located in the engine.
I try all the things that read in the article from bass and walleye boats magazine and I also try what you told me to do, but I could not find the problem, I also check the harness from the oil system, I use the harness from the other engine and did not do any good. I got another cdi unit and still the same thing, also change the foat swich and nothing.
What I do for a living is working with boats but this is giving me a hard time.
If you need some more info please let me know.
Thanks dude.

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

hello
when you say the alarm goes off while running are you absolutly positive the pump is running. if the filter is partly clogged it will use oil faster from the engine tank than the transfer pump can refill it. the symptom will be it will run at speed for 20-30 min then alarm. idle for 10 min and it will run another 20-30 min. did you check the switch in the remote tank(SWB) for continuity?

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

hello
is the boat close to you. and where are you from. what city, state country. I will help walk ya through it but ya have to tell me what kind of ohmeter your using and do you have the test harness adapters or do I need to tell you how to make a tool to insert in the pin sockets. can use use a multi meter with a fair amount of proficieny and how are you sure the trim sender is working with no gauge?

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

No it does not send oil at all, the only way that it send oil is if I use the siwtch.
I am from fajardo, Puerto Rico. I'm using a craftman meter. My father nows how to use it verry well. About the trim sender I remove it 2 years ago because it was broken. The boat right now is in the marina. The harness that I was usin is the factory one, I dont have any adapter, I just use the harness from the other engine ( the good one) and use it in the engine that I'm having problem with. Let me know how to make the test harness adapter.
thanks

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

you must have a working trim sender, the gauge does not matter. YOU MUST HAVE A WORKING TRIM SENDER, you have to test the sender before anything else.
if the CDI controller thinks that the motor is trimmed it will not transfer oil. if some one has wired around that some how maybe it would work. I have never tried it. the controller just asses information from the float and the remote tank. check that the switch in the remote tank is closed. use the ohm meter and go between the black and black red switch leads.
if it shows less than 2 ohms its acceptable. 0 ohms is better
the tan wire is always 12volt positive. its hot anytime the key is on. the blue wire controls the ground to the pump through the CDI controller. the grey switch just bypasses the controler ground.if the pump runs when the switch is toggled quit chasing the harness from the engine to the remote tank. its fine. if you had the key on and with the engine tank harness unplugged. use a small piece of wire and touch the black lead to the brown lead. with the engine trimmed down the pump should operate.

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

hello
I hit the add reply button :( :( anyway if you jump black to brown and it does not work automatic then its the CDI or the trim sender. you tried a known good CDI. test the sender.
do you know how to test the sender: its mounted under the motor on the inside of the transome bracket. did you remove the sender or the gauge ?
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha 200hp oil problem

hello
well I cant help ya. its not been maintained and without looking to see who has done what I can fix a franken rig by keyboard, I will try to scan the school page but I am not sure I can. anyway.
if the corroision in the harness pins allows the CDI to "think" the engine is trimmed more than 30* it will never transfer oil. the float switch in the engine tank sends a ground signal via the brown and black wires to the controler. the controler checks the trim angle and the ground signal from the remote tank. if trim angle is less than 30* as supplied by the sender and the SWB switch in the remote tank is sending back a ground signal it grounds the blue wire from the tank to the emergency switch. and the pump runs until the ground signal is recieved from the engine float switch white wire. when the white wire grounds the controler removes the ground from the blue wire.
thats about all I can do to help.
you may use an ohmeter on the blk/red wire and the black wire between the engine and the remote tank. this is a very simple system that has been booged up by lack of proper maint. without the visual indicators from the tanks and trim senders all trouble shooting must be done manually. without the trim sender who knows what it will do.
good luck and keep posting
