I own a 1989 Yamaha 225. Everything runs smooth but when it is running at 4000 rpms to 4300 rpms it will sputter. If you run it anywhere up to that it is fine. Fuel filter (changed it) Dry gas (did that) Pulled plugs while running it there(tried that) I am kinda lost. Please help with any suggestions.

Re: Yamaha 225 dropping out

I had a similar problem, ended up being a dirt dobber (bee) nest in the fuel tank (50 gal) vent line, I tried to blow air into the vent where it exited on the side of the boat and discovered it was plugged tight. Ended up having to go through the deck under the console, disconnect the line from the tank and blow it out with an air hose. The line allows the tank to vent properly now and motor (yamaha 250) is running fine.

Sounds like high speed fuel starvation. Look for blockages (as above), clogged fuel filters or separators. Also how long since the fuel pumps have been replaced? It's an easy job and should be done every 5 years or so.
