are these motors as good as they say. i am in the market for a boat and it seems most dealers have these on there rigs. i was told that you can have a normal conversation when you are cruising at top end because there is very little noise. also how is the fuel economy? any big headaches on the 150's? any info would be great!

Trench,<br /><br />I have the f 90 and really like the engine. I just have this confidence that the engine will give me many years on good performance.<br /><br />It is very quiet at idle but once it gets to WOT does make some noise. I can talk to the person next to me but you'd have to speak loud.<br /><br /><br />Kid

Re: Yamaha 4 Strokes

I just bought an F150 about 3 weeks ago. This is my first 4 stroke after 10 years of Yamaha 2 strokes. All I can say is WOW! <br /><br />From idle to about 3K RPMs all I hear is the noise of water flowing past the boat, after 3K it gets considerably louder, but not nearly as loud as a 2 stroke. Its also a totally different sound than a 2 stroke, not the typical whine of a 2 stroke, but more of a deep growl. <br /><br />I don't have any real numbers on fuel economy yet as I have only fueled my boat once.

My motor isn't a big one, a 40, but it's quite. We can talk at WOT, just a little louder than normal. It has less noise than my old 20hp Merc.<br />It uses 1/3 the gas as the Merc also.<br /><br />Best money I've ever spent.<br />Gerald K4NHN<br />Cayce, SC

It is very quite. I notice there is also some difference between brand motors. The Mercury make motor moise than a Yamaha, that's my opinion..<br /><br />Good luck,<br /><br />Mish

Re: Yamaha 4 Strokes

I have had an F150 and a T8 for about a year and a half now. No matter how cold the weather is, that F150 starts right up and idles flawlessly. It idles near silent, and even at 5,500 RPM, I can talk at just above a normal voice to my passenger. Great engine.<br /><br />The T8 is hard to start because I can't hear it running. If there is noise at the ramp, I need someone to stand at the back of the boat and tell me when I get it started. Warm weather it starts right up. On cold days, it is a little cold blooded, but not bad.

I had a F150 2005 go under water 2 years ago. We drained it flused it ran it . Repeat about 4 times with new oil. It has been running awesome for 2 summers. I had to put a new starter on the following year, but it was expected after being under salt water.

It is such a great motor. I have had no other problems. Very Effieient and quiet. Highly recomend.

cant say I can ***** about my F150, as a master Yamaha tech I can warrenty it gets more abuse/neglect than most and loves it.
couse my 175 E-TEC seems to be a glutton for punishment as well.

Re: Yamaha 4 Strokes

I had big problems at first. Yamaha exchanged the powerhead at 15 hours. It pissed me off that they didn't exchange the entire motor. I figure I lost $7000 in value. With 32 hours on it now I am completely satisfied with its performance. The fuel burn has come from 7 to 8 gph to 2.5 gph at last fill up. Do I trust it, not yet. Would I buy another one; based on how yamaha treated me in fixing it, you bet. Will I ever get over my conceived loss in value, not a chance.

Hi,

Yamaha F115 4-stroke here. I have used it for 5 seasons and up to cruising RPM at about 3500-4000 RPM it is no problem to have a normal conversation onboard. At full trottle there will of course be more noice and You will have to rasie your voice more to talk to others in the boat. F150 is not loader then F115.

Here is a nice video with Yamaha F150 on the transom:

Good luck!

F150. The bearings in the balance unit failed. It chewed up that composite gear and sent it through the motor. They said it coded low oil pressure early in time but I never herd an alarm. When it quit with an alarm it coded no oil pressure. It would start and idol after cooling for a while so I took it back to the ramp under an idol. It locked up and quit a few times during the three hours it took to get back.

P.S. This was also a motor manufactured in 10/2005 and rigged on a new ranger built in 6/2007, if that means anything to the conversation. It does to me. Anyway, I understand the no year model but I don't have to like it.

Re: Yamaha 4 Strokes

I doubt the bearings failed first, some of the early units had an isue with the balancer gear assy that as corrected.
best I remember units that got corrected at PDI had a white paint mark on the top of the balancer case.
that ECU also wond record a low or no oil pressue as a code.
it simply a code for abnormal oil pressure.
the oil pressure sender is calibrated and the ECU looks at pressureVS RPM and compares it to a program map. over or under presure for a given RPM will set an oil pressure alarm code but it wont say if its over or under pressure.
sounds almost like someone was snowballing a bit.
nice thing about Yamaha so far is about all they ask on the rare occasions I needed a powerhead was the shipping address.

Snowballing a bit  That'd probably be me. I was making a story out of fragmented bits of memory from four month old conversation about the possibilities of what happened. I have a print out they gave me. I should have looked at that before opening my mouth.
Anyway, I looked at the balance unit and the top bearing was toast, the shaft was toast. Most of the gear was gone. One thing that seemed amazing to me was that the oil filter was nothing but an empty can. All of its insides were gone.
Either way, it runs very good now but I'm still upset at the fact that I paid $14k for a two year old motor on a new 2007 boat that failed at 15 hours. I feel like I should have gotten a new outboard for my new boat, not an overhaul. I found never run, 2005 f150's with new powerheads for $7k. I paid for a new rig. Why should I have to eat the loss. It gets better each time I run it though, I'll get over it in time, I guess.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Yamaha 4 Strokes

if it was done by Yamaha you did not get a rebuild you got a new cyl and head assy. the remaining warrenty is still valid, its very very rare Yamaha authorizes a "Rebuild" 99.9% of the time they simply send use a complete power head and cylinder head assy with the balancer assy already installed.
like I said there were some early issues with the balancer gears that got resolved rapidly.
so the rest of your engine accesories have 15 hoursmore than the block, crank and cylinder head assy,
I bet its better than most automotive warrenties.
