I have a 40 HP outboard engine (on 14ft McKee) that has not been started for 1 1/2 years (due to illness). The engine year is 1983.

Now, I am ready to get back on the water.

Q: Do I need to have the engine "serviced" before attempting to start the engine?

Q: What do you suggest that I need to do (if anything) to the engine before starting?

I have changed (emptied old gas, and replaced with new) gasoline, purchased new spark plugs and 2 cycle engine oil - in the event that I need to have the engine serviced.

I thank you in advance. - Curt

Best to drain carbs and get all old fuel out of every part of the system from the tank, primer bulb, fuel pump, fuel filter, then any junk in gas lines, etc. won't plug up your carbs when you crank it up. Good Luck!
