I had another recommendation for Yamaha motors. Looking at getting a used 40hp with remote control. Other than the merc 4 stroke and etec (both on my list already) are there any others to have a look at? Or are there any to stay away from? Good years, bad years?

Yam makes excellent and reliable 40-50 HP portable outboards. Just don't buy an oldie. Is that a 2 stroke, 4 stroke 2 or 3 cylinder model ?

All the motors I would consider are "newer" - like 10 years or so. Yamaha would be a 4 stroke, not sure when they started making them though? Maybe around 2004-2006? My problem is I am not finding a whole lot of options. 40hp must be a popular size, and generally what is available is a tiller. That is why I am looking for more options. The more options the easier to find something. Another option is to start with a tiller and convert to remote, but I'd rather find one set up that way to start with.

Yamaha, Evinrude/Johnson, Merc - all have their fans. Other respected motors include the Tohatsu.
