hello,a mate has given me a yamaha 50DE mid 80's i think, its seized up,tho rest of outboard is mint,i took head off and gave the pistons a **** good thrashing with a rubber hammer, nothing moved at all,it is solid,im wondering if it would be viable to strip whole powerhead down? what would be worst case senario cost wise for parts? all 3 pistons look good ,no sign of ring damage, its not autolube, mate said it just slowed down and stopped, should i sell as is for spares or dig deeper and mend it,hope you can advise me,many thanks, nick, hampshire,GB.

Re: yamaha 50 strip down

Welcome to the board Nick,

If I were you, I’d pull the power head off and split the block and take a look. Its hard to tell what may be seizing the thing. If it’s real bad inside and beyond a rebuild you can always sell the good parts on ebay, what have you got to loose!

Ps I had a Yam 55 back in the mid 70’s when I lived in the UK that seized and I ended up selling the parts by advertising in the local paper. With ebay you will reach a much greater customer base.

by all means tear it down and take a look but DO NOT try to remove the 12 or 14 bolts that hold down the exhaust cooling cover. think you will find a one piece pressed together crank shaft. if one of the journals are bad , part it out. regards fred
