Yamaha 704 remote shift prolem

I have a 2004 Yamaha 50hp 3cyldr outboard. Previously I had so/so problems shifting. I just changed the impeller as I was having pee-ing problems. Put the lower unit back and the pee is like a 17 yr old-but I now cant shift-did I put it back wrong? Does that have anything to do with the shifting? My second thouught was that the other end(control) perhaps is messed up. But I cant find a way into it to check. Any Ideas?
