I have tried on my YAMAHA 8HP 1989 ( LONG SHAFT )to get the LOWER UNIT OFF... After having removed all 4 bolts I can only seperate the lower unit from the rest of the leg by an inch and a half. When I try to pul it ..it causes the gear leaver to move back and forth.... Ray Neudecker kindly replied mentioning that I must disconnect the SHIFT SHAFT.
I WOULD APPRECIATE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW I SHOULD LOCATE AND DISCONNECT IT. I can only see a bit of it and cant see where to undo it. Thanks Mike

It has been over 10 years since I have done one and my memory hasn't improved with age. I vaguely remember taking a small plate off and with a 10 mm wrench disconecting a joint to take it off. Hopefully someone else who has worked on a small Yamaha more recently will chime in with better instructions.

Mike,
If yours is the same as mine there is a small section of shift shaft exposed on the front of the motor above the anti-cavitation plate. On the shaft there are two nuts .The bottom one is a locknut and the other a nut about an inch long .Both are 10mm.I loosened the locknut then backed the long nut up until it came off the threads. This took some time as the threads were corroded and I had to work it back and forth with liquid wrench.this worked on my 98 9.9 hp so you may have something similar.

look under the swivel bracket with the motor tilted, should be a flat plate with 2 rods held together with a 10mm hex head bolt.
I am like ray my memory gets fuzzy.
however the parts diagram shows the plate assy for the shift dissconect.

ITS Off !!!! Thanks to all those that responded. Yes , I did find the solution under the swivel bracket. It took all of 1 minute to undo a single no. 10 bolt which held a little stainless steel clasp holding the shift shaft. great site..this. befor I went online I was trying to club the lower unit off with a plank of wood !?
