Yamaha 90, PLEASE help

I run a Skeeter 170 with a Yamaha 90 hp. Boat was purchased in Virginia
a month ago, took the boat out for my first club tournament on
Saturday,28. Serious problem with the engine, difficult to start and it
kept dying after it was started. When I put it in gear it kept
stalling..spent 30 tournament minutes getting it to just idle. After it
was warmed up, I put it in gear and it would stall, when I eased it
forward, it would ONLY go about 8mph and no faster. There was no change
in the throttle for perhaps 30%, I could move the throttle forward and
NOTHING would happen..I just moved forward at start speed.
Any suggestions,

Rebuild the carbs. They varnished over the off-season. Did you test ride the boat before buying it? My guess is the previous owner did noting to winterize it and let the gas go stale for the next guy to deal with. :(

Re: Yamaha 90, PLEASE help

Will,
Could'nt test drive it, bought it 600 miles from home in Feb., Not mechicanally knowledgeable....Any way to test it to see if this the reason before I leave it the mercy of a dealer ?
A good 3/4's of play in the trottle, just would'nt seem to fire up...plowed along at turtle speed.
Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Main way of testing is to fix it first. You can check fire and compression to help prove this is the problem.

Yep, Yamaha gauges...nothing about reduction mode indicated, sorry, never owned a boat with gauges before.

Re: Yamaha 90, PLEASE help

Anybody have any idea how much a decent mechanic would charge to build the carb/carbs (don't even know how many a Yamaha 90hp has) ?...How much is a basic tune up ?
Thanks

Re: Yamaha 90, PLEASE help

There are three. I charge an hour for the first and half an hour for each additional, plus test time. Others might charge an hour each. Basic tune-ups vary by dealer. Some do minimal stuff, others do more.

Thanks, I'm just a working guy and I guess I better buy the engine manual. Is it something a novice could/should attempt ?

Re: Yamaha 90, PLEASE help

I did have same problem, I removed the plug from the carb and squeezed the bulb a few times to flush "water out or bad gas" of each carb. Put plugs back in and it ran great. I am no engine expert and dont know if this is good or bad to do it but,,,,it worked for me. There was a forum on this but I dont remember where.
Just look for plug on lower passenger side of carb.

Maybe there is someone who can back me up on this.

Re: Yamaha 90, PLEASE help

They are very simple carbs. If you've ever done one on a lawnmower, you'll have no problem with these. You can get full rebuild kits. But you can save a lot of money by getting carburetor gasket sets plus float valve needles. 99% of the time, that's all you need.

A manual would be a wise investment. They are available in the Marine Store. Click the tab up on the upper left of this page. Many public libraries have them to borrow.

You won't need any special tools or expensive cleaners. Just a few average hand tools and some spray carburetor cleaner. Gumout works, but WalMart (and others) sell a superior cleaner called Berryman's B-12. It also has the advantage of being cheaper than just about any other brand. They also have a cleaner that comes in a tin bottle, but that's not what you need. You need the spray. Don't spray it into the throat as you're running the outboard. The carburetors need to be disassembled because what you need to clean is inside the bowl and spraying into the throat does no good. Compressed air also helps blow out the passages, but if you don't have a compressor, don't worry about it. Make sure you spray through each and every passage.

After you get them back on, you need to synchronize them. That's not hard. You just have to adjust them so they all open at the same time. Going by memory, the middle carb has the advance roller that opens all three. The others are linked to it. You just need to adjust the upper and lower carb to open at the same time as the middle one. There should be screws on the throttle shafts that you loosen and retighten to accomplish this.

Good luck and feel free to ask if you have any questions. We're here to help. :)
