Currently have a 98 Vmax 2.6L 150. Max operating RPM range for the Vmax motors looks to be around 6,000 rpm.
I was thinking about sneaking a 2.6L 200hp under the cover. (powerhead as an assembly with inductions system..carb/efi/hpdi..)
I was looking at a saltwater series 200hp 2.6L for the donor engine, but, the max operating range on these is shown as 5500 rpm.
SO, here's the question....
What's the difference in like models..
2.6L Vmax series 200hp -VS- 2.6L "other" series 200hp Yamaha's.

It seems 200hp isn't 200hp and the Vmax is the stronger performer....OR, Is that wrong?

I believe the gear ratio in the lower unit is different in the Vmax from the regular V6 motors.
If the p-head on a regular 200 is healthy, you probably could'nt hurt it spinning it up to 6000.

Cheers... Canuck 16.

Re: Yamaha Guru Needed.

My 150 gear ratio is 2.0:1. The 200/225hp Vmax and Saltwaters are 1.86:1.
I'm thinking another 50-75hp will allow me to turn a more agressive prop, have more power to "get" me to 6000rpm quicker, and the higher ratio helps a bit on the top end as well.
All this considering I can operate at 6,000rpm.
What I DON'T want to happen is ending up with a 5,500 rpm motor, higher gears, agressive prop, and spending that kind of money and winding up with the same top speed (at 500rpm less).
Just trying to gain as much insight into this prior to the attempt since things don't always work like planned.....

Change the exhaust divider plate and tuner for ones out of a V-6 Special 85-86 model. Increase the jets to 165 and up timing to 26-28 degrees. 28 only if using fresh premium and you have over 200 HP with your motor.

I don't think the jets in my small bore, 98 model carbs, can be changed. I'd like to find some carbs off of a 200hp (larger bore and the jets "can" be changed from what I hear).
What year range carbs do I need to be looking for?

The jets can be changed in those carbs. Normally, I use an orfice drill to do this rejetting, since the jets are rather pricey from Yamaha. If I were to change the carbs, I would look for some off a Excell (87-89 model) or the V-6 Special (85-86) model. Either will give a larhe gain over the ones you have now. Those motors were also known as a 225 and 220.
