I have twin 2001 Yamaha 115 HP four stroke motors on a 2001 Cobia 254CC and I am having a problem with the starboard motor tilting up on its own. The problem has been intermittent, and happens wheter the motor is running or not. What do I need to check, can I clean a contact or does a switch or motor need replacing.

Thanks,

You have a switch trying to short. Often it is one not included in the Yamaha harnes but an add on. The ones in the bows of bass boats are the culprit most often.

Re: Yamaha Outboard Runaway Tilt Up

Basically what usually happens is that water leaks into the switch creating corrosion which grows until there is enough to bridge the gap between the contacts. It usually happens to the UP circuit because that contact is at the bottom of the toggle switch, and where the water will stand. Ray's right, it's usually a boat switch, not a Yamaha switch. But it could be those as well. There is one on the throttle handle and one on the motor. Disconnect each in turn to see which is the culprit. Wire colors you are looking for are red for power, green for down, blue for up. If it's a Yamaha switch at fault, my bet would be the one on the motor. It's not only exposed to rain water, but sea spray as well.

Most trim switches have power all the time. This really accelerates the corrosion process by a bunch. The corrosion builds until it trips the relay. The only damage is usually a dead battery. If you happen to have a battery switch, turn it off when you're not using the boat. If not, don't worry too much about it.

Thanks to all for the info. I will check the switches. And yes, it did run the battery down. I keep them off now.

Dawg, this happened to me and I was forced to disconnect the cowling trim switch to alleviate the condition.

I now have a new cowling switch I will be hooking up soon.

Hope this helps.
