OK, have P60 outboard, year 2000
P60TLHY
Stalls above 1300 rpm unless choke at medium (get to port) setting.
Runs great at full throttle 5000+ rpm but when I hit a wave hard it drops to about 3000 rpm and stays there for some time. Suddenly regains power until hitting the next big wave pow! Spark good in all 4 cylinders while in "bad" mode. Disconnecting the "back to port" wire is no help. In bad mode, notice #2 plug coated with oil (not burning).
Any ideas?
Also, have the Clymer manual but it does not seem to be very good compared to the shop manual I have for my Toyota pickup. Where to get a good manual please?
Another issue is that the Yamaha parts online does not list the outboard, nor does it list a carb rebuild kit for similar models. Any ideas please?
Hey, thank you!

Re: Yamaha P60 weird issue

hello
mmmm we have some terminology problems. first the choke has no return to port mode. if it will run with the choke closed better than open then its time to open the carbs and clean them out. make sure the engine connector is in good repair.
how are you actually testing spark as good in so called bad mode on all 4 cylinders? is this a guess or what. and the P60 is a 3 cylinder.
it is listed as a pro 60 and it shares the same family as the c-60.
sounds like a carb/fuel pump issue
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha P60 weird issue

thank you for your comments.
Maybe it is missing a whole cylinder!
seriously, I tested the spark in the 3 cylinders by pulling the wire and watching it jump (not with my bare hands, mind you)!
No doubt the carb is the issue, but what is puzzling is the sudden loss of full power, and the sudden gain of full power. This just does not seem carb-like. Pulling the elecronic "back to port" connector makes no difference.
Here is the question:
How would I be able to tell if the engine was in emergency mode from the remote, so as to eliminate that possibility?
Thank you in advance,
goboard

Re: Yamaha P60 weird issue

hello
the emergeny mode you refer to on that engine is a default timing setting. that motor has a funny way of figgueing the #3 cyl timimg. it only has one pulser coil. if a crank position or other failure you can unplug the yellow wire and it will default to a fixed type timing. dont play with it. that motor cant go to default automatically. some one has to do it. if you have water or other nasties cruising about in a carb fuel bowl it will turn the gas on and off through the main jet.but the oil will always get injected and it will rapidly oil foul a spark plug. as far as parts the y models sometimes get left out. they left out the 200txry as well. on that model you should be able to use the 98 p60 for parts. good luck and post again if ya need anything else
