So I have searched the forums and I have not located an answer to this question. To begin, I am fairly new at the whole IO thing so yes, I've already done some stupid stuff.
Per forum rules, here are my specs. It is a 1992 Godfrey Hurricane with a Yamaha L4 3.0 engine and a Yamaha outdrive as well. From everything I have already found, the engine itself must be a 1991 as I could find no documentation of that engine being made in 1992. I have attached a picture of the stamp on the engine, but my problem is with the actual outdrive (pic attached).
The long story is, on my previous boat, the impeller was in the lower unit, so that is why I took this one apart. I was getting poor water flow so I wanted to make sure the impeller ribs were not cracked apart. I've learned since (Thank you Clymer) that the impeller for this rig is not in the outdrive its in front of the pump, so yes, I have taken the lower unit off of my outdrive for NO reason whatsoever.
My problem is, I cannot get the lower unit to go back into the upper unit, and I'm willing to bet it's because I forgot to engage the neutral switch before I pulled the lower unit. Of course I turned the shaft so that I know that isn't lining up properly. I can get the lower unit in the housing, but it's stops with about an inch gap in between the lower and upper unit.
Is this just the teeth of the gear not lining up and I'm going to have to do a trial and error to get it lined up properly, or does the fact that the upper unit was never put into neutral prevent me from any hope of getting this lower unit on WITHOUT taking apart the entire gear system on the upper unit?
I know this is a rookie mistake, but I'm hoping a pro can tell me what I am missing so that I can get my boat back in the water!
Thank you in advance!
